 I have been enlightened

Hello everybody,

I had recently found an opportunity to pick up my clarinet and get in on a jazz group. It has been three years since I graduated from high school and played my clarinet, and I decided I should get back into practice. That's when I discovered this place. After spending about two weeks of searching and reading the info on these forums, I have come to the realization that I really know very little about playing the clarinet, despite having played it for 8 years. I had been playing a student horn with the same mpc that came with it and the strongest reed I could get (VD 3.5). I had never payed any attention to my tone production techniques nor playing basics, such as scales. If you couldn't have guessed it, in those 8 years of playing, I had never had a private instructor.

Now, I am on my way to reworking my embouchure, have acquired a Fobes debut mpc, and have started experimented with softer reeds. To top it all off, after doing MUCH searching and reading, I decided to purchase a used TR147 off of "that auction site." I will happily await its arrival while I practice away.

If not for this site, I would still be stuck in the same rut I was in those past 8 years. I want to thank everybody here for pointing me in the right direction, even though you weren't aware of it.

Yes, there really is so much to learn from all the combined experience represented here! It's helped me in my own playing by reinforcing what my teachers have said but also by enlightening me beyond what I'd been taught. Many times I've used this information in teaching, or printed off a note or two and slipped the sheet into my Rose Etude book or one of the clarinet solos that was commented on. This way when I go back to those solos I have the comments from this BB that can help a lot.

So welcome to the gang! We'd like to hear your own observations as you make your progress. Knowing what challenges you have and how you've overcome them gives us just that much more knowledge that could help when dealing with our students' needs.

And learning to play jazz should involve a lot of listening. In case you missed an earlier posting of mine regarding my friend, Chuck Hedges, here it is again:

The vids are about Wild Bill Davidson, but the clarinetist is Chuck. Cool jazz clarinet doesn't get much better than him.

Like you, I returned to playing well after high school and learned more from reading this board than I ever learned in school (but I waited fifty years instead of three). By far, the best advice I found here is to get a private teacher, which I did. Only a skilled clarinet teacher can point out things that you are doing wrong that will ultimately limit your ability to play as well as you would otherwise be capable of.

one of the unfortunate side effects of being a college student is the complete lack of funds. at this point in my life, i simply can't afford private lessons. i'm lucky i was able to find such a good deal on the used tr147.

i appreciate everybody's support, too. what a nice bunch of people you are. :D
