In case you missed it here's a clarinet prodigy, age 4, playing a bit of Greig...guess who?
He's playing Lyons C clarinet which they say is made of plastic and will bounce off the floor ok.

I am a quite surprised to se things like that.
It looks like he is playing a Lyons clarinet, is that correct? It makes me wonder if starting early is part of his ability. It also makes me wonder if there will be more children in the future starting early and getting better results than those that start only a few years later.

Starting early may be part of his ability, but I'm wondering how his family, or whoever bought him that clarinet, discovered what he could do in the first place. Do you think he just picked up a recorder or something when he was 2 or 3, or did someone say, "y'know, why don't we try out young Julian on a clarinet, just to see if he's any good." Opinions?

My guess would be his parents play an instrument, and most likely clarinet.
Children tend to want to emulate parents or older siblings and it's normaly indulged to some degree.
I have a cousin who was a bit like that, obsessed with guitars as a toddler (his Dad plays guitar and mandolin) and never grew out of it! Now in his twenties, and still playing with a passion, complete with music degree

Your guess is a bit wrong ... his parents weren't musicians or involved in the music industry at all. There;s no reason for speculation, since Julian is alive & well ...
From his Mum:
Started on the Lyons C clarinet aged four, and moved to Eatons aged 7. He played with a sling, because the Eaton was too heavy for him.
