I am looking for some free audio editing software. Is there such a thing?? I have tried some samples that last for a few days before you need to upgrade to the full (paid) version.
I don't need to do anything super technical; I just need some simple software so, if I have a recording of a performance on one long track, I can cut out the empty time between pieces and separate the tracks. I can then use iTunes or MediaPlayer to put it onto CD.
Is there any software like this??
Thanks

You may want to try Audacity:

Audacity was recemmended to me a few years ago and it proved to be extremely useful. One of our examining bodies in the UK sells CDs of the exam pieces but rather stupidly with copy protection. (Do portable CD players still exist??) Audacity allowed me to transfer the pieces to my mp3 player and so use them properly.

Audacity for editing and it's very good.
CDEX is good for ripping to MP3.

I use Exact Audio Copy from "http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/" for the type of editing you described.

I have a copy of Audacity 1.2.6 but the effect and analyze functions are not present. You can find older versions of Goldwave (3.03 and 4.26) which are fully functional for putting up with the little ads. The newer 5.XX versions seem to die after 30 days unless you pay.

You need to mark a bit of your piece (or Ctlr-A for everything) - the effect functions are only applied to the marked sections. (Just tested it with 1.2.6)

The current version of Audacity is 1.3.5 (for Windows) and while it's formally a Beta it seems pretty stable to me.

Another tip to Audacity.
I'm using the 1.3.5 beta in teaching my music technology class, 20+ high school students learning the basics of audio editing using the built-in functions of the program. It's just wonderful, and there's no issue between the Mac and Windows users at home since it's platform independent!
