Hi All!

Am trying to find a link to a bass clarinet discussion about mouthpieces but no luck- can anyone refer me to one?
Also, my friend is looking for a good repair man in NY area, and I recommended the JAcobi in Philly0 anyone has his contact info?
He would prefer one in NY as he is coming on tour and time is short.
Also, he is looking for a store where he can test equipment in NY- I don't know where best to refer him to.Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks to all for the help!

Hi Michal - You can get a lot of B C and mp discussion here and in our {Search} archives, but there is a Yahoo Group, Bass_Clarinet, also available. I like the Pomarico [glass] B C mps for my comm. band playing. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

The name of the Yahoo group is NewBassClarinetList..

An easy way to join is to go to my home page www.clarinetxpress.com. There is a link there which takes you directly to the enrollment page. If you don't have a Yahoo password, you will have to register.

Facebook has a good discussion group that has a post on mouthpieces. I use a Selmer C* and even though I know there are other good mouthpieces I usually recommend a person start with those. Then I have them send it to Dave McClune to voice it if it is necessary, that's what I play on. Weiner’s in Queens usually has a good selection but someone just told me you can't try them on the premises, check it out. In any case, try several because no two mouthpiece of any make play exactly the same no what someone tries to tell you. I don't know of anyone in particular in NY since I live in MD and I use someone here. ESP

I remember recently John Moses recommending Kristin Bertrand at Roberto's Woodwinds (her number is 646-670-6565). You can search the website here for his comments. I've had good, meticulous, high-quality work done on clt. and sax by Matt Stohrer at Sam Ash on 48th St (Sam Ash Music, 163 W. 48th St. 212-398-6070). A lot of NY theatre musicians go to Mike Manning (917.513.8140 or 718.541.1342) and like his work a lot.

I, like John Moses, used to get my clarinet work done by Jimmy Yan, which is alas no longer an option. If John's recommending Kristin Bertrand, I'd definitely give her a try (and I plan to, when I need clarinet work done).

As far as trying equipment, I haven't really been shopping for stuff recently, but off the top of my head, I'd say Roberto's, Sam Ash, and possibly Rayburn Music's NYC store (44 West 62nd Street, across from Lincoln Center, 212-541-6236), but I'd definitely call all of them first to make sure what they have in stock.

Hope that's helpful.

I'm sure Ed Palanker meant to say Selmer C*, not Vandoren! Don't think there is such an animal. Anyway, it is not a bad idea -- for years the Selmer C* has been the default choice of professional bass clarinetists. Unfortunately the quality of these has steadily degraded over the years; there are still probably some good ones out there, but your odds of finding a stock Selmer mouthpiece that is even mediocre have diminished grievously.

I've recommended stock (albeit defacto custom-made) basscl mouthpieces by Walter Grabner and Roger Garrett. I still have yet to try a Vandoren basscl mouthpiece that pleases me!

I just change my post to read Selmer instead of Vandoren that was a typo. I've heard good things about the ones Larry mentioned above but I've been very happy with the Selmer C*, especially after McClune "voices" them. Another real good one is the Forbes RR facing, I have one of those as a back up, along with another C* that McClune worked on for me. You could usually get any of these for a trial from most of the big mail order stores. Like Larry, I don't like the Vandoren bass MP either. ESP www.peabody.jhu.edu/457 Listen to a little Mozart

For bass mouthpieces, Clark Fobes makes a top notch bass mouthpiece.

One shop that is not well known, but well worth checking out is Wright Music in Long Island. It is a quick trip by train from NYC. You can call for info.

They have a good selection of clarinets and clarinet related items. They are very user friendly. The owner is Jonathan Watkins who many will remember, having managed WW/BW in NYC and before that, Weiner Music. Jonathan is a fantastic guy and knows how to work with customers. There is nobody better out there in the business.

For clarinet repairs and custom work in NYC, Guy Chadash is well worth considering. He can do literally anything needed from standard repairs to custom tuning, keywork, and making barrels.

Larry mentioned, "I still have yet to try a Vandoren basscl mouthpiece that pleases me!"

I just have to say that I do have a Vandoren B45 bass clar mpc (from the 1960's) that plays pretty good--although both Glenn Bowen and Walter Grabner both have worked on it to improve its voicing and response. I use it as my backup to Walter's CXBS which I think is about as good as B cl mouthpieces can be.

Thank you all for your wonderful help!

I wanted to ask, if you use a selmer c*, which fobes would be best to buy as backup? I see there are different sizes on the catalogue. I use a c* and love it, but the Fobes sounds interesting, so I would like to order one, just dont know which one?

thanks again for all!

"I wanted to ask, if you use a selmer c*, which fobes would be best to buy as backup?"

I believe it may be the CF, but your best bet would be to contact Clark. He is great about responding to any inquiries.

As I wrote in my second post, I use the Forbes RR facing as a backup, almost used it as my first. It's very close to my C* so I think that might be best for you since you too use a C*. Remember, the'yre all a bit different so you really have to try several even of the same facing.
Also, I forgot about Guy Chadash in NY, he's done work for me on clarinet but I didn't think of him for bass. ESP
