 "new" Benny Goodman videos
Author: GBK

Just when you think you've seen all of the recorded Benny Goodman video clips on You Tube, and think there can't possibly be any others, just this past week appear about 25 more, from his 1976 and 1981 concerts in Prague, Poland and Denmark.

Just two of the 1981 Goodman gems (playing at the age of 72) -

Even 10 years ago this stuff wouldn't have seen the light of day except maybe on PBS

Amazing time that we live in.

I recently acquired the DVD from which at least the first clip...in Denmark...was taken. I liked Benny's comment...."Nice to be here.....where are we". Still great chops, however.

Here is a vid from "Swing Into Spring" 1959 where Benny can be heard singing a little at the end and leaves no doubt why he will always be remembered for his clarinet..................

William -

Andre Previn on piano... Just great !

Benny singing (reading the cue cards?) just before "Sweet Lorraine" - priceless !

From a different site, here is Part 1 of the same medley.

Check out the how they segue to "Sweet Georgia Brown" at the 3'00 mark.

Nice swinging solos by Previn, Hampton and Goodman...GBK

That looked like Shelly Manne on drums? Ella sang so well.

Great stuff - I had forgotten that Benny always played with his ligature on sort-of-sideways. I assume there was some purpose to it - did others at the time use their ligatures that way? Any classical players? Perhaps just a BG superstition?
