I am not a clarinet player, so all of this is quite foreign to me being a flute player. My son is going to play the clarinet and I have a used student model yamaha that needs a new mouthpiece.
I am looking at the fobes debut, hite premier, or just replacing the yamaha 4c. What do you all recommend?
Also, I was looking at size 2 reeds and perhaps a rovner dark ligature?
I would be very grateful for any opinions.

(You will find as many opinions as there are people to respond.)
I have my students start with the Fobes Debut, 2.5 Ricos, and I don't fuss with any special ligature until they attain the level by which they are sensitive to how the reed works for or against them. Then we usually step up the mouthpiece as well.

Fobes debut, inexpensive but good. But, like all mpcs, try before buy, and check for symmetry before trying.

Hey Neal,
Completely agreed! I love the expression of my student's parent's faces when I explain the INSTRUMENT they bought is wonderful but the mouthpiece that came with it is a piece of garbage.

On the other side, I personally like Rovner ligatures. Easy to use(one screw), practically idiot proof (one screw on the back, you can crank and crank and not break the ligature, although it's not suggested to crank that much), and in my opinion, they work well and keep that reed on the mouthpiece no matter what (versus other ligatures which, while good, might have a tendency to slip like the FL lig). Plus, no matter HOW you throw it in a bag or case, it's not gonna bend out of shape or become un-useable. You should see the poor state my Bonade Inverted ligature is in.

I didn't like the Debut I tried. Maybe it was just a bad piece.
I've had several students buy Ridenour's Encore. They're great for the money!

Which Rovner ligature would be best - the dark or the light? Thanks.

Please add the intermediate Gennusa to the list, it plays VERY well, it's hand finished and it's inexpensive.

I started on a Vandoren 5RV Lyre mouthpiece, and I'd still be using it had it not broken.
