I was wondering if anyone recognized the name PAULOERARD PARIS. I just got this really old clarinet as a present, but can't find anything about it online. Thanks!

Paulo Erard - related to Sebatian Erard, maybe?
Sebastian Erard revolutionised the construction and mechanism of the harp in the late 1700s, and later on the 'double-action' pedal harp from 1810 (which is still the standard concert instrument to this day), and also the mechanism of the concert grand piano ('double-escapement') which again is still being used by piano manufacturers.

Rite as rein, D S, I've seen an oboe and HAD [briefly] an alto clarinet [with DRK] made-by? [at least stencilled with] his name, both were "competant" insts. A Search of our archives [will do shortly {looks like a stormy day {week?}}may turn up more info]. Don

My very first bass clarinet was a Paul Gerard that I bought in NY as a student. It was a single octave instrument. I had a lot of trouble with the clarion register and above. When I contacted Joe Allard for bass clarinet lessons he assured me it was not me but the instrument. A bass clarinet needs to have two octave keys to play the upper register well. We went to Ponte Music Store where I bought the Paul Gerard and traded it in for a Selmer, wow what a difference. I had almost given up on the bass clarinet at that point. Joe asked them to put a C* mouthpiece in there, one that I had used for many years to come and Ponte gave me the full price refund as a trade in. My parents and I were very grateful to Ponte and Joe Allard. I continued to study with Joe for a year on bass. So much for my Paul Gerard bass clarinet. ESP www.peabody.jhu.edu/457
