Tips on last run in the Weber Concertino
Author: clarinetguy55

At the end of the Weber Concertino, there are four fast 32nd runs. I am having trouble with the last one that starts at low C and ends at F in the altissimo register. Does anyone have any tips?

It's very, very simple-
1. Lock yourself in a room with no distractions
2. Practice it until you can play it perfectly with the metronome at SIXTEENTH note equals 40 (yes, this is very slow).
3. Repeat PERFECTLY five times in a row
4. Put up the metronome to SIXTEENTH equals 42 (one click) and repeat PERFECTLY five times
5. Keep repeating PERFECTLY and moving up one click until target tempo attained, somewhere along the line you will switch to eighth notes- if it's not perfect, go back to step 2

Keep in mind- If you actually do this, it will be no problem and you'll be able to play it in your sleep. If you half-ass it, you still will have trouble, especially when you are nervous.

Music is hard.
Technique is very, very simple.

Practicing something often is very good but practicing it right too helps even more. First off, make sure you're not lifting your fingers to high, especially going over the break, you can't cover the next notes in time if you are. Now try practicing it this way. First practice the first octave, C to C. Play that until you can do it with you eyes closed over and over again, first slow and work it up. Then do the same thing with the second octave. Then do it from the high C to the high F. After you have those perfect play the entire run but hold the two Cs longer then the other notes, a little pause on each of them. After a while you can shorten the length of the Cs until you can play it even. Do it with your eyes closed. Remember, it's never too late to practice something slow again. Also, if you can't play it slow you probably can't play it fast either. ESP www.peabody.jhu.edu/457

perfect practice makes perfect, and just like the above posts you should slow it down, perfect it, then speed up, etc...
If you do not have a personal metronome. there are websites tha actually have metronomes on them. just google "free online metronome."

See, what we need to know is, what does 'having trouble' mean?

Is it uneven? If so, where? What are the first two notes that you have difficulty going between?

Do you arrive at the top too late?

Is intonation at the top a part of the problem?

Think about the answers to those questions, and then look at what I wrote in the thread about Capriccio Espagnol. Ask yourself: which bits of THIS run require fast as opposed to slow finger movements?

Then come back here and report, if you want.

One of the best bits of advice I ever got about Weber was given me by an artificial intelligence program called ELIZA. You can look it up, and even run it -- it was written in the early days of AI by a man called Joseph Weizenbaum in LISP, and it mimicked a Rogerian psychotherapist. When you ran the program, it went:

"HELLO, I'M ELIZA. WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM?"

?

....and you had to answer the question. The program then picked your answer apart, and had a series of canned responses which enabled it to ask another question...and so on. So if you wrote:

"I'M FEELING DEPRESSED"

...it might reply,

"DO YOU OFTEN FEEL DEPRESSED? TELL ME ABOUT YOUR FAMILY"

etc, etc.

So on this occasion, I was practising the Weber quintet on my 9-keyed clarinet, and when it said:

"HELLO, I'M ELIZA. WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM?"

I replied:

"I CAN'T PLAY THE ****ING WEBER CLARINET QUINTET!"

...to which ELIZA replied:

"WHAT MAKES YOU THINK YOU CAN'T PLAY THE ****ING WEBER CLARINET QUINTET?"

...which as I said, was exactly what I needed to hear:-)

If you'd been running PARRY instead of ELIZA, it might've shot back, "WHY DO YOU THINK I KNOW SECRETS ABOUT THE ****ING WEBER CLARINET QUINTET?"

(PARRY was set up to respond like a paranoid schizophrenic.)

When I mean "having trouble" I mean that the intonation in the high notes is worse.

Are your reeds strong enough to support the high notes?

They are good enough to support high notes. Today I practiced that run for my whole practice and I have it almost perfect.

The standard fingering altissimo F is a notoriously flat note on clarinet, especially on Buffets. I have to add the right-hand sliver key to get this note in tune on my instrument, even with a good reed.

I don't have a Buffet, I have a Leblanc Opus II.

If your F is out of tune, the same fingering trick(s) should work on a Leblanc, too.

The so-called "standard fingering" from the fingering charts usually calls for putting down the right-hand Eb key. If you are too sharp doing this, you can omit the Eb key. If you are too flat, you can either substitute the sliver key for the Eb key or play both the sliver key and the Eb key together. Try them out in front of a tuning machine and find the one that works the best for you.

I used to play on a Leblanc years ago, but it was an old Dynamique model (from the 1950s).

Stanley gives a live example on Youtube. Has he made a regular CD of the Concertino?

And he adds a sliver key to his F, too--watch him play the last note of the piece. Neat clip.

Thanks for all of the tips. They have been really helpful. I have never heard of the fingering trick. I am going to try it tonight. The thing that has helped a lot is practicing slowly.
