Anyone happen to recall who was principal clarinet in Philadelphia before Morales, but after Gigliotti. I read that Burt Hara took the job for a year in 1996 (?) but then left to go back to Minnesota. Who filled the years after that before Morales joined in 03? Thanks!

I believe Caviezel was not appointed permanent principal, but was probationary principal (even though for four years). I've read that Eschenbach (who was appointed in 2003) wasn't happy with him, which is why they declared the position open.
I'd be happy to be corrected on this.

Ken- I think it was that Sam was appointed acting Principal for a year, then was Principal for three, but was denied tenure by Wolfgang Sawallisch. Since, however, he had served as Principal for more than the two year tenure process, there was some contract issue and to avoid a protracted legal battle, he was offered the retiring Don Montanaro's spot as Assistant Principal. All this should not confuse the fact that Sam is a beautiful player; sometimes the shoe just doesn't fit.
If I have screwed up any details, or the whole story, I'd be happy for someone to set me straight.

Hmmm....an analogy comes to mind:
Delegates are to Superdelegates
as
Tenure Committees Members are to Music Directors

So do we know who played principal from 1997 until Sam Caviezel joined the orchestra?

There is a terrific recording, and i believe the only recording of philly on DG, with Christian Thieleman conducting. Wagner Orchestral Excerpts, and Mr. Montanaro is playing principal. Fabulous recording, and the clarinet playing is actually like an angel singing.
I grew up in philadelphia, and I am a former student of Anthony Gigliotti, so I have always had a particular interest in philly principal clarinet playing. Blumberg may remember some of this also.
I heard C. Theileman conduct Wagner with Philly at the academy of music in 1997, week of performances and conjunction with the DG recording. Montanaro was principal that year, and I heard every concert. The previous year, which i believe was a seasoned shortened by a strike at the beginning. This was actually burt hara's only year as principal. While his tenure was breif, he made some excellent music. Excellent performances with sawalisch et al including Brahms 3, Dvorak 7, also a solo recital at the Ethical Society. On this recital he performed Bernstein, Brahms 2nd sonata, Premiere Rhapsody, and Schumann Fantasiestucke. This recital made a distinct impression on me, and was a formative experience for me, because at the time I was a hard working high school student. Also, prior to the official season starting, as it was delayed by a strike, the orchestra did a benefit concert, with maestro luis biava, at which Mr. Hara, i believe, made his philly debut, and the rep included Capriccio Espagnol, Enescu Romanian Rhap, and some other stuff. A recording exists of this concert. The other possibility of Hara's debut performance is a joint benefit concert philly did with the NYPO. Philly played Tchaik 4, NYPO played Symphonie Fantastique, somewhere in New Jersey. Philly rehearsed for this particular concert at the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra Center, a group i was a member of at the time, so naturally I went to hear the rehearsal. Could have been first time Hara ever played with the orchestra. So it was very cool.

Hi Rod Rubber, The DG recording of Wagner excerpts with Thielman and Philly is actually Burt Hara playing principal.

That benefit concert, with maestro luis biava I believe was his first performance with them and they didn't even have a rehearsal before doing the performance.
Not that big a deal in itself, but that was also the same way that Gigliotti started his job with Phila. - was a Richard Strauss work (I don't remember which one other than it was a more lengthy one - possibly "a hero's life"? )
Gigliotti told me that he went up to the Ormandy and said "I haven't played this work before" to which he replied "you will like it!!"

I was listening on the radio to a recording of the Dvorak violin concerto played by Stern, Ormandy, and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the clarinet sound was excellent. Any idea who that was?

For a recording it was most likely Gigliotti.
If it were from a live performance than it probably would have been Montanaro.
