I just listened to a recording of the Hindemith Quartet with the boston symphony chamber players. The clarinetist is William R Hudgins, and I absolutely love his playing! I presume he plays in the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Can anybody give me more information on this fine player? I'd like to know who he studied with, what equipment he uses, if he's made other recordings, etc.

Thanks Larry. That's great. I'm not surprised that he's a student of Harold Wright.
I would still love to know what his set up is (even though we all KNOW that it's the player not the equipment!!!)

For awhile he was playing some sort of Vandoren M13; I don't know what he's using currently.

Bill is Principal with Boston. I played with his wife Catherine (Kathy) at the Marcellus Nova Scotia Music festival back in 1988 when they were still in Charleston.

Catherine studied with Marcellus at Northwestern, and possibly Bill did too. (she spoke of how Charleston was so much more affordable for them than Chicago was - though his bio doesn't mention it).

Bill's earlier teacher Jules Serpentini lived 1/2 mile from where I am now, though I studied with his main competitor Leon Lester back in high school.

Thanks for your responses. I really like his playing on this Hindemith. I see that he's recorded the Mozart Quintet on BSO records, but don't know where I can order that. Maybe i should email the BSO?

Does Mr Hudgins play Buffet, Leblanc, Selmer or what?

I was able to buy the Mozart Quintet off of Boston Symphony's website. It's a good disc! All of their principal players are wonderful. I think he plays on a Buffet R13. I'm not sure of this currently, but he used to play on Vandoren Blackmaster reeds. I'm not sure which strength.

Yep the BSO had quite a section with Hudgins, Martin and Andrews.
I forgot who won the 2nd clarinet opening, but I am sure he will be great too.
Actually my favorite player in Boston is Tom Martin, maybe simpy because I got to hear him up close.

As for the BSO 2nd position, didn't Wayne (Martin?) just beat out Jim Zimmerman when the latter's final audition with Hudgins was interrupted by a fire drill?

Tom Martin who plays with Bill is on an album that you may not have heard - Quintet in G minor for Oboe, Clarinet, Violin, Viola, and Bass, Op. 39 by Prokofiev

Artists: Edwin Barker | Keisuke Wakao played Oboe | Cathy Basrak played Viola | Malcolm Lowe played Violin | Thomas Martin played Clarinet

Really great playing - found it on Itunes.

Great teacher too as several of my top students have studied with him and liked him a LOT.
