 French clarinet solo with orchestra
Author: mozartmlle622

Can anyone think of pieces for Clarinet solo with orchestra in the French repertoire? I can only think of the Debussy Rhapsodie, Saint-Saens Tarentelle (w/flute,) the Tomasi Concerto, and one or two of the Solo de Concours, which have been orchestrated.

Please add to the list, if you can!

Googling French clarinet concerto found http://www.ciao.se/Fredd~Frenz_13_AZ_se.html, which mentions Roussel and Bozza, among others.

The Francaix will eat you alive. The Milhaud is even harder.

Reuff. There are also quite a few classical ones, like Pleyel, Levefre amongst others.

Jean Rivier - Concerto
Alain Bernaud - Concerto Lyrique
Pierre Max Dubois - Beaugency Concerto
Ida Gotkovsky - Concerto for Clarinet, Concerto Lyrique for Clarinet

Xavier Lefevre (born in Switzerland but appears to have studied and lived in France) wrote six (?) concertos. Marcel Mihalovici (born in Romania but lived in France) - Nocturne.

Lefevre is credited with the C#/G# on the French clarinets around 1790. I have concertos four and six and they lie very nicely on the classical instrument. There are six concertos and various other concertantes and sonatas. According to the preface of the edition the concertos were never published in Lefevre's time and the manuscripts haven't survived. The two scores I have where taken from the first set of parts. They are really nice and would make a good project for anyone.

Another two that come to mind ...
Alexandre Tansman (Polish, but lived much of his life in Paris) - Clarinet concerto (written for Louis Cahuzac) and Concertino for clarinet, oboe and strings.
André Patrick - Rhapsodie for clarinet, percussion and string orchestra.

I VERY strongly second the Bozza Concerto.

d'André Patrick actually wrote at least 4 rhapsodies for clarinet, percussion and orchestra (full or string). A fifth is for clarinet and vibraphone.

Jack Kissinger,
Thank you for setting me right on that Jack. Andre is a really sweet man as well as a great clarinetist, and has just completed a clarinet concerto which he plans to publish soon.

There are many French works for clarinet and orchestra as the two Concertos by Jacques Bondon,
Concertos by Tomasi, Alexandre Tansman, Jean Rivier, Eugene Bozza, Francaix, Philippe Hersant, Charles Duvernoy,
Nicolas Bacri, Charles Chaynes, Darius Milhaud,
Michel Lysight (Belgium but French speaking),
Scaramouche with orchestra by Milhaud too,
Canzonetta by Pierne,
Sonatas for clarinet and orchestra by Charles Koechlin, etc.
I have recorded few of these.
You can look at my website :

Jean-Marc,

Welcome to the Board. I hope we will hear more from you. The link you gave above did not work for me but I found a site at:

http://www.jeanmarcfessard.com

with an English version at:

Are these what you intended or do you have something more recent?

Best regards,

S. Meyer playing Milhaud's Scaramouche is thrilling.

The Bacri Concerto is really cool. Almost has a Bartok like movement in it.
