Oscar Peterson played San Francisco and Sausalito several times back in the 1950s and 1960s when I was growing up in the area. He was a generous musician who, for me, embodied the community spirit of jazz. He seemed completely comfortable playing backup for other people even though he could and did play long and spectacular solo gigs--while those same people for whom he'd played backup cheered him on from the audience. I hope he gets a classic jazz funeral. He deserves it if anybody does. He had a reputation as a fine music teacher, too. I'm sorry he couldn't have lived in good health to about 105, teaching and playing the whole time.
