Now I know how it must've felt when Art Tatum died. Peterson had some amazing chops, and I'm consumed with regret over never having seen him perform. This is why I've got to see Alfred Brendel before he retires next year.

R.I.P., Oscar.

You will be missed.....

"A jazz player is an instant composer," Peterson once said in a CBC interview, while conceding jazz did not have the mass appeal of other musical genres. "You have to think about it, it's an intellectual form."

One of my very favorite keyboard players.

With Bill Evans, Erroll Garner, and now Oscar gone, I can not think of a contemporary player that pleases my ear in quite the same way.

Oscar's recordings will ensure that his sound lives on for all to marvel at and try to emulate.

Oscar Peterson and Andre Previn had a wonderful interview that aired on PBS many years ago. They talked a lot of shop, so it was interesting to musicians in the way that a non-expert interview seldom is. I don't think it's generally available, but with Peterson's passing, it may reappear. There's a reference here: http://www.topix.com/forum/who/oscar-peterson/TIQFDBTUBED2I910C, but the link from there times out, at least today.

Oh Dear...... I saw Peterson in the Usher Hall, Edinburgh in the 70's. He was on stage for nearly 3 hours........ just himself, no accomp musicians. He blew us away and even after that we were wanting more.... amazing concert which I've never forgotten.

Another sad loss. Thanks for the link Ken but haven't called it up yet.

Here's a link with messrs Peterson and Previn duetting......

Oscar Peterson played San Francisco and Sausalito several times back in the 1950s and 1960s when I was growing up in the area. He was a generous musician who, for me, embodied the community spirit of jazz. He seemed completely comfortable playing backup for other people even though he could and did play long and spectacular solo gigs--while those same people for whom he'd played backup cheered him on from the audience. I hope he gets a classic jazz funeral. He deserves it if anybody does. He had a reputation as a fine music teacher, too. I'm sorry he couldn't have lived in good health to about 105, teaching and playing the whole time.

By the way, at www.view.com are listed a couple of 2-tape (VHS) biographical videos (that include interviews & his music) of Oscar: "Music in the Key of Oscar" and "The Life of a Legend" which are on sale for $8.00 each through the end of Dec. They also have a DVD on him. Just go to that site and click the SALE button. Eu
