Vandoren publish a chart of their different mouthpieces, showing the tip opening and length. For each, they recommend reed strengths for blue-box, V12 and rue Lepic reeds.
Do people think these strengths are reasonable? Or do people use strengths outside the range recommended by Vandoren?
I'm interested in hard data, for example "I use a 5JB with a #5 reed", rather than vague musings about how all these things are different for different players.
You've guessed it. I play a Vandoren mouthpiece,with a reed outside the recommended range. No, not a #5 on a 5JB.

My opinions: First of all the "info" on the mps is primarily advertising so I don't pay any attention to it. Second: Same for the reeds. "I use 2 1/2 with all the mouthpieces I use."

I have used a no. 3 traditional on 5RV, B45 dot and B46. As a student I played 2.5 traditional on 5RV. The reeds feel hardest on B45 dot and softest on 5RV. B45 is harder work and B40 is like trying to pedal a bus.

Lynn-
Does Steve have you work the 5 down at all with a knife or rush? Just curious.
