 OT: Alex Klein, oboist sighted!
Author: Katrina
Date:   2007-12-22 19:51

I was watching some show yesterday on my new DirectTV Satellite. One of those commercials with a "real person" for Geico came on (I don't know what channel or time) and lo and behold...the "real person" was Alex Klein!

I had known him at Oberlin, and had seen some photos since so I wasn't surprised by his appearance. But on a TV ad? Tooooo funny!

Edit: I just found it on Youtube!

Ya know Alex was completely down for the count a few years ago. He had a dystonia that prevented him from playing and he left the CSO as Principal Oboist because of it. Amazingly he came back to playing from it. Not sure what he's doing currently, but pretty much a miracle that he could play again.

Super Genius player, the "Ricardo" of Oboists.

I am disgruntled about David Blumberg stealing my Morales/Klein comparison.

Anyway, I saw this too!!! I told all my friends about it (via Facebook status) because I'm a dork, as you all probably know. I love the commercial, haha.

And playing a lot of chamber music in Europe.
I have torrented a lot of broadcasts of European chamber festivals and Klein
is in a lot of them.

I used to own his recording of Vivaldi concerti. I hope some of you have it.I gave it to my dentist's wife, who is an oboist, out of graditude for his
having saved enough of my teeth so I could continue to play the clarinet. I confess I've only heard Morales on orchestral recordings with Levine and the Met Orchestra, but I would recomend "the Heifitz of oboists" (or, perhaps, "the Elvis"?).

They had his commercial on today - then I proceeded to argue with my wife whether he was "ordinary" or not.

At the point when she said Ricardo was an ordinary person I gave up. Right before that I remembered the major life/marriage rule "you can get some later, or be right now, not both"........

David,

My wife and I were just talking about that...it's the guy from the police academy movies who is normal/average, not Klein!
