 Klezmer Clarinet
Author: Patricia Roe

Hi
I'm just finishing my doctoral studies and I'm hoping to get a scholarship to study in the U.S. in 2008-2009. I would like to study Klezmer Clarinet and would love to hear suggestions as to who I could study with and in what institution.
Many Thanks
Patricia Roe

Do your studies have to be affiliated with an institution/degree-granting program? I believe most of our klezmer "luminaries" take students. I studied for a couple of years with Ilene Stahl of the Klezmer Conservatory Band and found her to be an excellent teacher for me. If you contact me directly, I can give you her contact info. Other greats to consider might be Andy Statman (NYC), Kurt Bjorling (Chicago), Matt Darrieu (NYC). I am sure there are others.

Maybe Michele Gingras at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio? don't know her or that university personally, but I know she is a specialist in klezmer style clarinet.

I have met Michele briefly and heard her several times, she is an excellent clarinetist.

Here in Charlottesville Joel Rubin has just begun teaching at UVa, and I have been quite impressed as well.

BTW, my parents are from Tipperary and Clare...good luck with your search!

Grab the Cds listen and learn. You don't need lessons! Maybe to play the clarinet not to play klezmer! There is no way to learn klezmer without listening to it!

Tom Puwalski, former soloist with the US Army Field Band, Clarinetist with Lox&Vodka, and Author of "The Clarinetist's Guide to Klezmer"and most recently by the order of the wizard of Oz, for supreme intelligence, a Masters in Clarinet performance
