I have heard the Ries Trio and like it.
I am now considering it to be part of my next recital.
I would appreciate some discussion/thoughts on it.

Ferdinand Ries was Beethoven's student, amanuensis and biographer. I don't know the referenced Trio, but have heard his Clarinet Concerto and one of his symphonies. Liked all I heard -- I think he is an unfairly neglected composer!

I am in the midst of cataloging many recorded concerts of chamber music. I had forgotten the Ries work and was really impressed with it, its form, use of the clarinet, and of the other instruments as well. For instance, it is as good a work as the Opus 11 of Beethoven. I can and do recommend it for your consideration. Why it has not found its way alongside the Brahms is just happenstance.

Ries (b Bonn, 28 Nov 1784; d Frankfurt, 13 Jan 1838) was a pianist, composer and copyist. He was the most celebrated member of the family. His father taught Beethoven so Beethoven taught Ries the piano.
The next three years were spent in Vienna studying with Beethoven and often acting as his secretary and copyist. Beethoven taught him the piano, but sent him to Albrechtsberger for composition.
I have played his Sextet for cl, hn, bsn, bass, harp and piano a number of times and it is a good, tuneful piece.

Are these concerts that took place at Concordia or is it a collection of your concerts at various locations?
Might the completed catalogue be available or accessible - perhaps in a permanent collection at Concordia?
Recently I was reminded just how difficult it is to find recordings of chamber pieces involving clarinet, when it took a month to track down a recording of Glinka's Septet.

Simon, I have so many recordings of concerts made while in Montreal, perhaps over 200 hundred. I have first made CDs of them all, or most because they were contained in a large chest, and they were all Cassettes, taken from various "Music From Montreal" "Arts National", Brome Concert Series, and all the concerts I played at Concordia. The conversion from cassette adds some dimension which I cannot name, but they are superior to the original cassettes.
I have thought for several years of making them available as study pieces in the form of some kind of album series, not for profit, just to remind me that yes, I did perform the Messiaen 14 times, and yes a student might like to hear a performance of the Hummel Quartet, or some many other seldom performed works. They are all live concerts, with an error here and there, but that is what is left.

Consolidating your recordings is a great idea, a service to both students and professionals. Having access to recordings of seldom-played pieces is luxury few of us have.

You might have to perform the Messiaen a 15th time, with the centenary of his birth coming up in 2008.
Let us know when the project is completed.
I could arrange a home for the recordings at McGill.
