Sabine Meyer and The Berlin Philharmonic performing the Nielsen Concerto!!

New Release today

Good to see them together doing a recording. Kind of surprised, but it's possibly quite a different scene today than it was close to 20 years ago.

Yes, and how inconsiderate (stupid, cheap etc) not to provide sound clips.

For those who know the Berlin Philharmonic "Clarinet Wars" story, this is a surprise.

I'd figure that there are search topics a plenty on it, but I'll give it a shot.

Back in the early 90's when "wondergirl" Sabine Meyer got Principal Clarinet Berlin Philharmonic there was quite an uproar from the "ol boys club" status of the Orchestra. Bluntly put, they didn't like a woman playing amongst them. Within 3 years she was drummed out of the group and went on to become the Soloist that she is.

It was titled "Clarinet Wars"

I gave you all the link to Itunes as it's immediate and does have the sound clips. Sure a CD is better, but $19 compared to $10 and immediate does have it's attraction. ($19 after shipping).

Hey Dave,

What I thought was the real meat of the story was that Sabina was Karajan's personal pick. Some thought there may have been some extra musical considerations on his part and this led to a serious rift between Karajan and the orchestra that never healed, sullying his last years at the helm.

Sabine was really caught being the first important (non-harpist) female member of an all male orchestra. I believe Vienna still is. Tsk, tsk.

David-
The early 90s? Karajan died around 1989. Clarinet wars was circa 1982.

What's the big deal? Sabine has already recorded Mozart, Debussy and Takemitsu with the Berlin Philharmonic and Abbado.

Karajan - did you know that he drove a Porsche 959

There were only 268 of those cars produced. Bill Gates and Paul Allen both own one.

Porche is horsepower
Sabine rides horses in her spare time.
Karajan has a Porche.

I thought Sabine was only offered a one-year position and after that year she was gone. Am I wrong?

Nes, it's an Itunes link. You have to have the Itunes program in your computer for the page to open. That's where the free previews are (4 of them each 30 seconds)

I'm wondering, did Karl Leister pay 2nd clarinet to Sabine at that time?

If so, quite a duo!

Niclas - try searching that album in your Itunes search box. The URL is for the US version.

It may well be released in your country!

And no, Leister didn't sit behind anyone. She replaced him when he left/retired?

Berlin Phil has had two principals for a long time. Sabine didn't replace Leister, she replaced whomever the other principal was. I don't know his name.

I think the Berlin co-principal who followed Leister and preceded Meyer was Herbert Stahr. He was a fine orchestral player, but less satisfying as a soloist. I heard him play the Schubert Octet and the Mozart Quintet many years ago at Carnegie Hall, and it was to snore.

Just received and listened to the CD today.
Sabine did a super job...as did the Quintet.
The disk doesn't have a word to say about any of the performers, just their names. Seems like the blurb should have a word or two about Sir Simon and members of the quintet.
Still it's a must-have for clarinetists!
