 bug infestation

I had a phone call tonight from a student in a panic because her clarinet case and clarinet seems to be infested with some sort of bug. They look like tiny white dots-but they move!
The instrument (Buffet RC) is kept next to a piano (which also has some of these bugs on the back). It has been kept in the same place for about a year but the bugs have only just appeared.
I haven't seen the instrument yet but obviously am worried!!

I have never come across this before- what are they?
What can be done to get rid of them?
The clarinet has not been used much recently- have these bugs come from something in the house?

That's glycophagus domesticus, the house mite.

They like damp environments (ie they eat fungus). Thoroughly and regularly air the apartment, and let instruments dry before you pack them in the case.

I have a collection of paper ephemera where everything is mounted on black pages, making book lice (little moving white dots of an insect) easy to see. Could it possible be those?

Man, that's almost enough to make you want to quit playing, or put your instrument in a ziplock bag........
