Different teachers have mentioned the fact that they use words in auditions to switch mentally from one excerpt to another. Do any of you do this and if you do what are some words you use for the basic excerpts?????

I think it's important for one to come up with one's own words. One derives these "focus phrases" from one's experience with a particular excerpt. I could say that I use "Icy" or "Inner Pain" for Shostakovich Nine, Mvt. 2, but it won't mean nearly as much to anyone else as it does to me. If you come up with your own, after you've practiced the excerpts and know what you need to musically demonstrate, it will have more meaning and will make it sound like you "own" the excerpts more than if you rely on someone else's phrases. One person may need more flow in Brahms, and another may need more space; these players may come up with different catch phrases in an attempt to reach a similar ideal.
Does this make any sense?
