 Cleveland 2nd
Author: Kevin

Word on the street is that Dan Gilbert is stepping down from the 2nd clarinet position, and will be replacing Fred Ormand at Michigan. Does anyone know if this is true? And does anyone speculate if this will affect his teaching at SUNY Stony Brook?

Word does have it that Dan Gilbert will replace Fred Ormand at Michigan and that he will also retain his position at Stoney Brook. He will be busy!

Cleveland has been auditioning principal trombonists for five years. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/entertainment-0/117990979084830.xml&coll=2

Second clarinet is perhaps less crucial, but it could be a while. Welser-Möst is well known/notorious for taking his time.

It will take some time, especially since Cleveland will not hold an open audition for the 2nd position. Odd things have been taking place with their personnel lately, and finding someone to meet the subjective criteria of Franz and Frank Cohen will be tricky.

Gilbert is going to Michigan. Heard he would also teach at Case, but not Stoney Brook.

I wish I were a teacher. Perhaps once you have sat in the best symphony, the only place to go is to teach. Those who can do, those who can't teach.

Those have done everything teach!

My humble opinion is that it is the liniage that is remembered, and that is thru teachers. My hat is off to him for giving up his seat to teach, and pass on his talent. We all have the obligation to do that to the best of our abilities.

Of course I don't know mr gilbert, but i have heard that he is an incredible teacher. What a gift.

Peace, love and understanding
