Which Buffet has the darkest tone quality Prestige R13 or Vintage?
Is there a Buffet that is darker than either?

From 'The Clarinet Cook Book' (I asked they agreed I quote from it):

Clarinetio Darkio

Buy whatever clarinet you can find (it is preferable to buy one who is orginally dark). The darkest clarinets will have - high price, fancy name, a lot of advertisement.

Buy black paint or black spray. Spray the entire clarinet, including the keys and all parts (or dip in paint). Especially important to spray the reed.

Take your clarinet and enter a room. Close the door and all windows until it is as dark as possible.

Shut your eyes, and play your Clarinetio Darkio!

Actually : What is the most important :

1 - clarinet
2 - reed
3 - mouthpiece
4 - ligature
5 - clarinetist

you'll find 1000 (or more) threads on this (very helpful and nice) BB, but I bet n° 5 can make most of the difference (including the dark tone you're looking for).

Don't ask me how , that's another 1000 threads :-)

(LOL)

I've always felt that the Prestige plays with a darker sound than the vintage R13. Most of the R13 players that I know are always trying to darken their sounds via custom ligatures, mpcies and/or barrels, some to the point of "dull". For me, I like the rather "bright" ringing sound of a good R13 as opposed to the less etherical/whimsical/darker "whatever" sound of the Prestige--even though it tends to be a better playing instrument regarding eveness and intonation.

BTW, my old clarinet prof always used the term "chocolate," rather than dark, to describe a clarinet sound. What other terms do y'all use??

Yes, William, I also tend to prefer a brighter sound.
Since you mention it, what's the difference between a Prestige and an R13?
Is the R13 an American model? I haven't heard of it outside this list... Prestige is the big thing here and an RC if you can't afford it. (-what? are there other clarinet brands? nooo...)

"1 - clarinet
2 - reed
3 - mouthpiece
4 - ligature
5 - clarinetist"

Err, I think the clarinetist should be on the top of that list ;)

Jane,

The Buffet website describes the Prestuge R13.

Belgian clarinet,

Yes. I have been known to play the saxophone, from time to time(my teacher would kill me!). My straight ahead Jazz sounds the same on
my Yamaha and my MarkVI. It is just easier to do on the Mark.

In the final analysis, the player does make most of the difference.
