Must've been a year or so ago I lost my Legere bass clarinet reed. Drove me nuts. I looked everywhere. We had a couple of red squirrels hiding in our house in those days (don't laugh) and I began to suspect one of them had made off with it for nefarious squirrelly purposes.
The other day my wife was cleaning the big overstuffed chair and down under the cushion in a crevace she found my reed. Basically we'd been sitting on it for the past year.
It looked fine. No squirrelly tooth marks or anything. I put it on my mouthpiece and tried it -- it worked fine.
Sturdy reed there.

T'was missing for over a year,
Suspected a pest
who stole it to nest.
But no ... It was under his rear!

Vanished right out of thin air.
So as not to obsess,
And save all future stress,
Never buy one - get a pair.

Ah, plastic reeds. Why would you choose them?
Their cost makes you surly to lose them.
But when they are missed,
take comfort from this:
not even the squirrelly can use them.
