 How many reeds?
Author: Koo Young Chung
Date:   2007-03-22 23:46

This is rather stupid question, but I'm wondering how many reeds you
use per month(or per year )on the average.

I'm not asking the number of reeds you're actually using, rather I'd like to know how many reeds you end up spending in a month ( a year) including all the rejects.

My teacher plays in the Symphonie orchestra in my city and also teaches at the Local University. I swear to god everytime i see him trying out new reeds, it would be 5 boxes at a time... (I would see that once every ~2 months) But remember, he must also be trying reeds at other times other than before my lesson...

I live in Vancouver, BC... where this year's Clarinet Fest will take place

About 6 boxes (of 10) per year. University student, playing between 4 and 6 hours a day. And yeah, I play 'em'till they're REALLY dead!

8 boxes a year? seriously?

I use 3 boxes a month(V12)....more for auditions. I've started to make my own reeds, so that number may change.

A high school student playing in band 3 times a week with sporadic practice habits will certainly use fewer reeds than others more dedicated to their instrument, or those who play consistantly for pay.

I'm sure that the people who play only for their own enjoyment (no public performances) can get by with a reed every few weeks.

As for the others of us who are silently judged by our peers every time we play....

Is this reeds played on and being worn out, or reeds needed to generate enough good ones?

Probably a little less than a box a month. And that's using the reeds beyond their dying day. But I'm gonna be experimenting with some synthetic reeds to find a suitable, longer lasting alternative.

I go thru maybe 5 boxes a year, or somewhere around a reed per week.....but I don't just break out a new reed and use it until it dies. I rotate between four or so at a time. I generally average about 2-3 hours a day playing time.

Ho! I could never imagine playing with such few reeds.

I'm tempted to take a pic of my desk and show you all my "current" reeds. I have the empty boxes from about 15 vandoren boxes (mind you, this was accumulated over time, not just within the past few weeks), many dozens of reeds lying around on glass, etc, and 3 reed cases (not including my Eb...) full (8, 12, and 4). I must burn through a box every 3 weeks - I'm sure I've purchased at LEAST 4 boxes in the past 2 months.

However, I just finished with auditions, which was a pretty crazy time. Also, I am currently using a resonably beat up and probably warped mouthpiece...my instructors do agree that I may only be getting a very small percentage of the reeds I could be playing on because of my mouthpiece...I'm going to order up a bunch and select a new one next week. No, I haven't just thrown away all those reeds which I rejected on my current mouthpiece.

And no, I'm no rich man, I have paid quite the sum to maintain so many blue boxes...Believe me, I've started to really grind away and making reeds work more so than I did a few weeks ago.

Um...if I really push it (which I do now cause I'm dirt poor) I make reeds last 4-5 weeks a box. Well Vandoren reeds with 10 reeds per box.

I'm guessing between 1 and about 5 each month (sometimes a little more, but I don't think I ever finished a box in one month). This includes the ones I throw away which are only a few sometimes but mostly none (I usually play all or almost all the reeds in a box). Some I save for later because with different weather different reeds will work better. I'm one of those that GBK mentioned ("silently judged by our peers") but I don't play 5-6 hours every day like some others. I don't do any of that break-in. I find a reed I like and play it until it's not good anymore (sometimes I'll keep because it might be ok again some other time).

A phenomenal clarinetist in a top 10 orchestra who makes his own reeds told me he used only 12 reeds last year in the orchestra. I can't imagine that; I don't make my own and I use about 2-3 boxes a month during weeks of heavy performing.

Home made reeds last longer supposedly. I've studied with 2 major Orchestra players that make thier own. One gets throught the season with 60 reeds, the other with 20. I saw one slap on a reed that was dated over six month old and play a concert on it...world class playing. So there has got to be something to that theory.
