Does anybody know what's going on with the vacancies at both the University of Michigan and Michigan State University?

I know that they're in the middle of interviews and stuff for both, I've talked to Dr. Hartig at MSU and it sounds like they aren't as far into their search as U of M is (I didn't even know Elsa Ludwig-Verderh was retiring until fairly recently, though I was expecting it sometime soon). I know personally that they've narrowed it down to the final 3 or so at University of Michigan, interviews/masterclass/recitals are taking place this week, so I'm guessing they'll be announcing it within a few weeks (which is good for me, since I'm auditioning for both schools and I'd REALLY like to know!) i know they're trying to bring in a big orchestral player, so it should be interesting to see who it ends up being there, and at MSU.

It hasn't been mentioned so I thought I'd give you all an update on the U of M Finals... I spoke to old teacher/friend Dan Gilbert and as it turns out there are 3 finalist for the teaching position= Dan, Eli Eban, and David Peck (from Houston). Dan did his audition this past monday and I am not sure of the status of the other two finalist. Soon enough we'll find out!

My teacher, Ted Oien, also mentioned that Bil Jackson was a finalist and that he was in Ann Arbor on Wednesday for his audition. He didn't mention Eli Eban, but perhaps there are more than 3.

That'd be a pretty big commute for most of the candidates, unless they're thinking about giving up their playing jobs. I know Dan McKelway commuted back and forth from Cleveland to Winston-Salem to teach at NC School of the Arts for a couple years, often driving back and forth (7hrs each way!). It'll be interesting to see what happens...

The three candidates are Dan Gilbert, David Peck and Bil Jackson. Word will be released in the next few weeks.
Eli Eban dropped out, sadly.. My guess would be that he is getting paid quite a bit by Indiana, and thats where his family is of course..

OK. I apologize readers. I do feel bad for what I wrote. It was a bit "harsh." I did edit the post.
My sincere apologies go out to David Peck, Eli Eban, Bil Jackson, GBK and of course all of the readers.
I know what was said cannot be taken back. All of the candidates for the position are very talented, hard working, extremely accomplished clarinet teachers and performers. I had NO right saying one was way better than any other. I didn't think before I wrote. I would appreciate it if GBK could take his post saying what I said down, so it is gone completely. Thanks!

I just thought it was good scuttlebut, that isn't too far-fetched, from someone who is in the music school all week.
Work-aholic cello professor Richard Aaron is teaching out of town 2-3 days a week. I think this is the better side of things, as he appears to be a committed teacher.
When David Shifrin passed out of the Cleveland Orchestra and through Ann Arbor en route to a solo career, there was lots of talk about how many clarinet lessons were covered by grad students while he was performing out of town.
Kim Cole-Luevano at Eastern Michigan University had Dan Gilbert there for master classes and a concert on March 11. In my brief view of him, he seemed to be a very decent person with a consistent and methodical approach to his art and teaching. He sure has a good job now, and there is no telling what will be offered to whom and who will accept such an offer. I think it is an important for them to get a good teacher who will stick around.
