I'm very curious what symphony players in the U.S. make their own reeds. I know of Bil Jackson (Colorado), Ted Oien (Detroit), Ken Grant, and Robert DiLutes (Rochester), but I'm sure there are more I can't think of at the moment. It would be great if we could start a list here from those of you who know.

Bob Coleman, who retired from the St. Louis Symphony after a stroke several years ago made his own reeds. He also had about a million suggestions, all good, for adjusting store-bought ones.

dan gilbert from cleveland. Also, steven Barta, form baltimore. Dan Gilbert uses the super high tolerance german style reedual. nice machine

i am a free-lance player in various orchestra here in NZ, and while i'm quite well aware of my shortcomings- on a good day i do quite well thank you very much.
i always keep a stock of commercial reeds, but have a couple of home made ones going- i use a Reedual with Davie cane blanks using a template that is a bit Evolution and a bit V12... At the moment my 3 best reeds are all homemade, although a little on the soft side. One of them (that's been going for a while, though now it's on it's last legs and may become the new template) is the nicest sounding reed i've had in the last 12 months.
Christopher Sereque from the Seatle Symphony makes his own reeds, i think. As does Richard Macdowell (not sure if he has a symphony gig, but teaches at Austin). Oh, and Charles (Chuck?) West.

many german and vienesse clarinetists perform on hand made reeds, either made by themselves, or pals.
Alfred Prinz made some very rustic looking hand made reeds. A reed making expert that I know has been able to produce hundreds of excellent viennese style clarinet reeds based on three hand made reeds he received from mr Prinz. These reeds are ridiculously thick at the bass. Probably twice as thick as a normal french reed. these reeds will not vibrate whatsoever on a french style mouthpiece. Their maker desccribes their hardness as "6," "or more."
Performing on a handmade reed is very fulfilling, atleast in my experience.

Lee Livengood of the Utah Symphony makes his own reeds.
While I've only made like $48 playing professionally over my 50+ year of playing, I make my own reeds with an ATG system out of Vandoren V12 blanks.

Wes Foster, the retired principal of the Vancouver (BC) Symphony makes his own. Chris Sereque, principal of the Seattle Symphony, told me a couple of years ago that he too uses a Reedual machine and makes his own.
