I am planning to form a trio for my school's commencement contest and I will be planning to play Beethoven's trio for clarinet, piano and cello, op. 11. Has anybody perform this piece before? I might find it hard to find a good cellist to accompany me in this piece. What other instrument you might arrange the cello part for?

The cello doesn't accompany you. It's a trio.

I reckon bass clarinet may win over bassoon - though both are viable substitutes for want of a competent 'cello player.

I played this with a bassoon before without any major hurdles, the only downside being that a bassoon is sometimes not as loud as a cello in loud passages.

Personally I'm with DP on this, hunt the cellist out. Substitute rarely sound effective.

I love the sound of a sweetly played trombone. Would that be out of the question here?
Alexi - never arranged, but just wondering what other more experienced would think about this as a substitute for the cello in that piece.

Clarinet, trombone and piano sounds like a great group! I don't this specific piece to say if it will work, but original thinking like Alexi's here is always good to maybe find something interesting.

I think you will have an easier time finding a good cellist than finding a good bass clarinetist or bassoonist.

Trombone's a bad idea ... it's a foul brass instrument for starters and Beethoven only ever used them twice (Sym 5 and Sym 9) and certainly never in his chamber music.
If all else fails - (i.e. all the good cellists drop dead) I'd use a Bassoon as a last resort.
Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

It would take a staggeringly good trombonist to play this music effectively, that's for sure.
But, oddly enough, Beethoven did write chamber music for trombone: the Equali for trombone quartet.

Not sure whether diz is saying: "it's a brass instrument, and brass instruments are foul" or "among all brass instruments, it's one of the foul ones". Either way, he must have heard me playing.

Perhaps french horn would be an alternative? Works well in wind quintet, and has enough of a range I believe. And probably wouldn't be too hard to blend.
But then again, as Diz seems to dislike the trombone, I tend to dislike the bassoon so that's why I'm thinking of OTHER alternatives.
