 Liberty by Selmer

Ahh yes, the beginning of a school year and the introduction of many new and frustrating brands of instrument shaped objects...

These just showed up in the rental pool at some of the local music stores. Has anyone had any experience with them? The material it is made out of looks and feels very cheap/weak. I could be wrong.
The Selmer page doesn't list this "brand" anywhere. They do have the Prelude by Selmer on the list.

Oh yeah, Gibson-Baldwin has a whole series out. Any ideas as to who actually manufactures these instruments? They can be found at Target.

Hi,

Selmer liberty is the same as the regular selmer line but stamped liberty for certain retail stores specializing in rentals. One for instance is music and arts center, where i noticed that a large percentage of the instruments newly shipped in to be rented to students were selmer liberty.

Several of my alto sax students have purchased the selmer liberty big bell alto sax. This is a "step up" model horn and plays nicely.

I do not believe these instruments are the poor quality type found in local walmarts.

best

Thanks for the reply. I just had a chance to play through one today. I definitely felt a little sturdier than the others. Playing through it was less than impressive. Music and Arts has put this line into their rental pool. Hopefully they can sustain the abuse.

I was quoted a price at approx. $525 for the clarinet. Rather steep for how it feels under the fingers and plays. I'm going to play through some of the other Liberty clarinets in the next few days.

M&A also said Selmer also has a pro-level "Liberty" horn that is selling for $3300. I'd be curious to hear some opinions on this one.
