i have a recording of the vienna philharmonic under karajan copywrited in 1985 (although i think the recording was actually made in may of 1984) that i have been using to prep some excerpts. i was wondering if anyone knows who played clarinet (primarily who played principle) at that time, and on this recording. kind of trivial, i know, but i haven't been able to find it online. thanks!

I would assume the clarinetist would have to be Peter Schmidl during this time period, as Ottensamer did not join the orchestra as second clarinet until the early 90's. To my knowledge, Schmidl is still viewed as the Godfather of clarinet in Austria (even guest principaling with the orchestra to this day in certain concerts), and aspiring clarinetists cannot hope to make the orchestra without having studied with him, either privately or through the Holschule in Vienna.........

From his artist biography:

"...Ernst Ottensamer was born in in Upper Austria in 1955. He studied at the University of music in Vienna and graduated with distinction. In 1979, he was engaged to the Vienna Philharmonic Orchastra. Since 1983 he is the principal clarinet player of this orchestra...

Yeah GBK is spot on (as always) and, go figure, they sound of the clarinet playing is wonderful ... how could they possibly DO it on a non-Boehm clarinet?!?

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

European orchestras generally have two or more principal players. It is true that Ottensamer was promoted to a principal clarinet position in 1983 when Alfred Prinz retired; however, the main principal is Peter Schmidl. In the mid 80s concert, with such an important conductor as Karajan, I would guess that Schmidl is the most likely first chair.

Here's the current VPO roster with players listed in chair order:
