From the klarinet mailing list:

According to this news report "Sibelius, the world’s favourite music
notation software, has a new owner. Avid Technology, the US video
editing firm, is shelling out $23m cash (£12.2m) for London-based
Sibelius."

Avid Video is a cool, very high-tech, cutting edge company. The founder (long gone from the company, though) is good friend of mine. Why the grumble? Avid has deeper pockets and a better development department than Sibelius could dream of.

"The Register" thinks Sibelius was sold too cheaply. I'm not at all sure I agree. It sold for 15 times PBT. Not a bad price for a company that probably doesn't expect a huge amount of growth in its market.

I wish Sibelius luck in its new ownership, but I've had the experience of working for a London-based development team that was bought by a US company with deep pockets and a large development department. The results were not pretty; there's little left now.

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

"Grumble"?

Avid is one of the leading NLE video companies in the world, and has done little wrong with its acquisition of Digidesign (of ProTools fame). I can see a lot of sense in acquiring Sibelius. For a company that lives at the heart of television and film production, scoring software fits perfectly. Deep pockets. Broad distribution. Omnipresent in recording and video studios. I guess I'm not seeing the problem.

Grumble because I've seen far too many products take a serious dive in quality when they've been bought out.

My hope is that they'll integrate Sibelius into Pro Tools to provide a software package that is useful for BOTH notation and sequencing/recording. Finale has been trying to do it with the Kontakt player to some limited success (they need to get rid of GPO, though, IMO because there are much better alternatives).

Sequencers are terrible at notation and notation software is terrible at sequencing but most folks use both (particularly for film music). The irony there is that Pro Tools is not really thought of as a MIDI tool - it's primarily used for audio.

So there is the potential for something very good to come of the buyout - we'll see. I think the execs were thinking along the lines of Avid + Digidesign + Sibelius = Video + Audio + Notation. Makes perfect sense in the film world.

(I can't believe Sibelius sold for $23M - what's their market other than notation software and some educational tools?)
