 Very occasionally you come across ...

Very occasionally you come across something you've not heard before and think ... how nice!!

Hans Christian Lumbye (contemporary of Josef Strauss), Danish King of Light Music ... often referred to as "the Strauss of the North".

"Fontaine-Vals"

Has the most delicious clarinet solo in its coda ... it's a blast!!

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

That's why I try to listen to as much music that I haven't heard before as I can. I found that most people (including musicians) prefer to listen to music they already know. This always seem strange to me, but I guess I am the strange one.....

Yep diz, I've got a great CD of Lumbye and our S.O. played one of them ...from memory a polka which emulated a train starting and finishing a journey with the guard's whistle and an announcement of the arrival station.
Percussion section had a blast.

I know the Naxos version and I don't like them at all. I own a danish recording with the Tivoli Orchstra ... much better playing and much more stylish.

Yes ... that's called "Københavns Jernbanedamp Galop" (Copenhagen's Steam Train Galop) and I adore it, such a nice depiction of a steam train.

Funnily ... in Danish jernbanedamp breaks down into:

jern = iron
bane = track
damp = steam

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.
