 Yamaha CSG

I recently evaluated a Yamaha Bb CSG with silver keys. Great instrument but the only thing I noticed, and this may be just my perception, is that the clarion register sometimes seems to have a hard edge to it. Gorgeous chalemeau regsiter! Didn't know if it would play sweet/mellow enough for chamber music. Would the hamilton plating help this? Anyone have any comments about the csg?

I can't see any reason how the keywork plating will have any effect on tone - call me a cynic, but I reckon all these claims made by large companies are a load of old b******s.

No two clarinets will play exactly the same as the quality or density of the wood and finishing is variable and is the determining factor in how any instrument performs, not the cosmetic appearance - the same clarinet will play the same no matter what you do to the keywork plating - have it replated in nickel, copper, gold, platinum, rhodium, have the plating stripped completely, you name it - I doubt there'll be any perceptable difference in tone or playability.

Have you tried the CSG using a different set-up?

The claims of a perceived sound difference from Yamaha's Hamilton plating has been discussed quite often on this board.

A search on "Yamaha Hamilton" (no quotes) will give you lots to read.

Here are a few of the better threads:
