About Premier Rhapsody by Guy Dangain
Author: Hiroshi

I found an article written by Guy Dangain about Debussy's Premier Rhapsody in Selmer's URL. In French. This may be interesting.(I need too much time. [down])
http://www.selmer.fr/images/pdf/debussy.pdf

p.s.
I did not know there is a version for clarinet and orchestra.
The cl/piano version had been composed in the period 1902/Decc-1903/Jan and was published through Durand in 1910, and the cl/orchestra version was published in 1911. There are big or misterious differences in Debussy's manuscripts for these two compositions according to Mr.Dangain.

What a coincidence, i was just listening to this wonderful piece performed by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, George Pieterson on clarinet and Bernard Haitink conducting (Recently appointed principal conductor for the Chicago Symphony?) On the contrary, i never knew that the original was for cl/piano.

Charles Neidich, who has made a close study of the piece, says that Debussy always intended it to be with orchestra. The piano version was published first, and in a great hurry, for use as a Paris Conservatoire contest piece and is full of errors. Debussy carefully corrected the orchestral score, which should always be used. See

Mark has done us the great service of scanning the orchestral score. See

The Dangain article at Hiroshi's link is in French. It's a PDF, but the text can be extracted. I'll feed it to Babelfish or Google Translate and, if Mark thinks the copyright police will permit it, I'll post an English version here.
