So I went into the local music store today to try out a new mouthpiece, and found that they had a new 10G sitting in back (new as in never bought). It's serial number is M7XXX. Does anyone know about the M-series 10G's? I'm thinking about buying it, as I have been looking for a pro instrument before I head off to college in about a year and really liked the tone of the horn. I searched the archives but couldn't find anything except that X thru A were the best. Thanks for the help.

I say just figure out if the tone/tuning of the horn is good enough to warrant purchase.
Whenever you find stuff about an entire series, it's always a general statement. So even if someone were to respond with, "The M-series were complete crap", you could have found the exception to the rule.
I say read up (or better yet, print and bring along) Tom Ridenour's article on selecting a new clarinet, give the horn as thorough a tryout as you can in the shop, and figure out if THAT horn is worth the purchase.

I have been playing on a M series Bb clarinet for 5 yrs now. It was hand selected for me by Anthony Gigliotti himself. Don't believe the hype entirely about the x-a series. Gigliotti, Loren Kitt, and Paul Cigan all played on E Series. The M Should be a good horn. My M Series Bb, after only slight customization, is a fantastic horn with incredible projection, and an excellent scale.

I have an M series 10G and love it. I had to take it to my repairman to have it adjusted and key heights set as it came from WWBW in very poor condition as far as key heights. I'm using a Gregory Smith 1* with it and it makes for a wonderful combination. BTW I parted with my R13 and kept the 10G. Not that my R13 was not a good horn, I just preferred the 10G

I've played wonderful 10G clarinets in most serial ranges, including my own clarinets (a Y series and E series). I've also played on others from several serial ranges where intonation was a bit uneven. You've just got to play them and decide for yourself. In the more recent serial ranges, the sound can lack the colour and depth of the older ranges. I have been disappointed by several E series 10G clarinets, but my E series 'A' clarinet is nothing short of profound.
