Yo,
My band teacher was telling me about crystal mothpieces. He said you should play them with a 3-3 1/2 reed. Does anyone know anything about them? Are they worth the extra $$$$$?

Crystal mouthpieces do not cost extra over a hard rubber mp. Also, you can use any strength on it that you would normally use on a hard rubber mp. For instance, the reccomended reed strength for Pomarico's new "Nigun" mouthpiece is from 3-4.

It depends on the facing. They put different facings on crystal just as on rubber or plastic. However, I don't think you'll find too many true crystals faced for the softer (1-2) reeds.

I have a crystal Vandoren A3, which I think is really made by Pomarico, and has a very open facing. It takes about a 2 1/2 reed for me. The sound is brighter and more penetrating. I used it for playing jazz-style stuff, and popular music, but now that I'm concentrating more on a chamber-music style, I've quit playing on that one.
If you're interested, try several (as with any mouthpiece) before you buy.

IMHO, one must match the reed to the mp and to what music is being played , I have several glass mp's, the old O'Briens #2's can't use more than a 2 1/2-3, my Selmer Clarion [like the B45] plays easily with many reed strengths! Keep trying. Don

I own a Buffet R13 clarinet which is fine for classical but when it comes to jazz, the tone is too small and soft. Will a crystal mpc change and amplify the tone or is the buffet not made for jazz. I notice that jazz musicians never play Buffet but seem to favor Selmer or LeblaNC

I'm happy with an open faced Otto Link (5 star) mouthpiece on a Buffet clarinet for jazz. It has roughly the same tip opening as my Vandoren B45, which means I can usually use the same reeds.
