 To Chadash-Hill Users

Hi all,

I just received a few Chadash-Hill Mouthpieces in the mail and am trying them out. I am not exactly sure which facings Chris Hill sent me but it should be in the 104tip/36length ballpark.
I currently play V12#4, but they feel a little stiff to me on this mouthpiece. I am interested in knowing what reeds are being used on this mouthpiece.

You can post here or email me privately.

Thanks

"I am interested in knowing what reeds are being used on this mouthpiece. "

According to your post, V12 #4 reeds are being used on that mouthpiece.

If the V12 #4 feels stiff to you, try the V12 #3.5

Larryb,

I guess I should have been a little clearer. I currently play either Vandoren M15 or M13Lyre moutpieces with V12#4 reeds. I got three CH in the mail yesterday and although I didn't have much time to properly test them I did experiment with reeds a little. The V12#4 felt a little stiff and the #3.5 a little soft. I tried a 3.5 classic and that was a little better. In any case, I am wondering what other CH players like best. Maybe a different cut reed (Gonzalez, Rico, VD "classic',...) matches the facing curve differently, who knows. I am just curious...

Make sure you're using new reeds, and not reeds you've broken in on another mouthpiece.

Sylvain, try Vandoren Black Master and Rico Grand Concert Evolution. Guy plays the Black Masters and to the best of my knowledge Chris is blowing GCE's. Since it is their design, might as well try what they play. Note that Chris will adjust the facings to whatever your reed preference is.

Also ask Chris what he suggests so you have a starting point. As you settle in on the mouthpieces it would be great if you would post your thoughts about them.

Try taking a little bit (one or two scrapes on sand paper) off each side of the reed (not on the vamp, but literally the side to make it slightly narrower). Guy suggested this and it seemed to work well, not only on the chadash-hill mouthpieces but many others as well.

On my Chadash/Hill with the 1.04 tip opening, I use Grand
Concert Evolution # 3.5 reeds. Michael Norsworthy tested
my mouthpiece and liked it with his Vandoren Black Master #3's.

Sylvain,
The reeds in any box will differ slightly, so I'd suggest trying more of each strength. Depending on weather, altitude, etc., if you don't like either, then you may want to try a Grand Concert Evolution #4, which is on average between a V12 # 3 1/2 and #4. (I play a GCE #4 1/2, which I work down a bit.) Something else to try would be to get a #4 V12, and use a Vandoren reed resurfacer. Since the table of these mouthpieces is flat, unlike the Vandorens, which have a dip in the table, it is essential that the bottom of the reed is flat. If you prefer a dip in the table, I can put one in for you.
Chris
