a good piece to play for an audition
Author: noahbob
Date:   2005-08-08 23:34

My teacher wants to audition the class for seats comming up and he wants us to select a piece to play for him for our audition. I own the mozart concerto, the webber conerto in f minor, i won the stamitz conerto in b flat. Out of these which do you believe would be the best choice for a seating audition. If you have any other sugestions to add too the list they are more then welcome.

Thx

Noah

None of the above.

A better choice would be an etude from the Rose 32. They will show your skill and your proficiency while letting you show your musicianship

I would assume you are playing this audition with piano accompaniment, if you do decide to play something from the repertoire, choose a work which was written specifically for unaccompanied clarinet.

There are many works to choose from, but you may want to check the more standard repertoire for clarinet solo (Stravinsky (A/Bb clar), Osborne, Persichetti, Sutermeister (A clar), Wellesz, etc..)

However, properly prepared and performed, a Rose Etude will demonstrate your overall musicality...GBK

Noah,

You may be making too much of this. Pick an etude in Rose 32 that is in a reasonable key but one that also has a lyrical section as well as a little technique stuff. I like 7, 9, & 10.

If you don't have Rose 32, you need it!

I too am in high school. Use a Rose 32, Rose 40, or Klose etude at minimum. What are other members of your clarinet section doing... if you could give us an idea, then we could also better recommend pieces (IMHO its better to over-prepare and play a HARDER piece that shows off your strengths). Keep us updated!!! Good Luck!!!

I made the "mistake" of playing the Stravinsky 3 pieces for my Youth Orchestra Audition and was told by the Conductor that it was "not appropriate a piece to play for an Orchestral Audition" as it was "too modern" or something like that.

The Conductor who said that to me was a Clarinetist (Gigliotti's girlfriend eventually) to boot!!!

I played Rose#9 in a high school placement audition and placed really well. The director said it was a good choice, because it showed both technical and lyrical aspects, and was just the right length. So, good luck in choosing. There's always the traditional first phrase of the Mozart, but if your director is anything like mine was he'll be sick of hearing that by the time you audition. Good luck choosing, and in the audition!

So many instruments to play........so little time to play them!

Man, David, that sucks. I'd have said "good day to you" and walked out right then. But then I'm a comp major and it would have made for years of good conversation :P

I ended up playing Principal with the Orchestra, but it certainly was an uncomfortable moment......

For my youth wind orchestra audition (concert band repertoire) I'm playing the Scherzo and Trio from the 5 pieces for solo clarinet by Gordon Jacob and 2 excerpts from 2 concert band pieces. I think the scherzo and trio is a good contrast of range and tempos. My teacher had this piece and said it was extremely hard and would be impressive if someone at my age could pull it off so I decided to do it. Good luck!

Noah,

I'm a little confused here, there are 32 Etudes and the Studies are in two books totaling 40. Did you mean #1 of the 40 Studies? If that is so, I don't believe you will be well served by selecting this piece. The Studies are pretty much technical solely; look how few dynamic changes are present.

IMHO the 32 Etudes in Rose all seem to go beyond being just technical. In the Etudes, with just a few exception, you have a change of mood and style which will be important to demonstrate in a chair placement audition. Look more closely at the Etudes in terms of using them as a vehicle for showing off your technique as well as highlighting your control of dynamics, expression, and tone quality.

I agree with Hank that #1 of the 40 Rose Studies would not be the best piece to show off your complete clarinet proficiency.

Although Bonade famously used #1 as a teaching vehicle for phrasing, breathing and precise finger control, in your situation, there are better choices...GBK

Rose 32 Etudes should be good for a high school audition. We use them in our district. Pick a slower, lyrical one and a faster, technical one. Play half of each. This year we're using #'s 2 and 23. I, too, like #9 if you are just playing one for a well rounded piece.
Good luck,
Rebecca

Placed first chair with number 9. Playing the piece isn't a guarantee obviously, but it worked out really well for me. Good luck!

noahbob

I got to thinking: Where did you place last year?? Any friends in the clarinet section (maybe you both could have each other listen to your pieces and give suggesstions??)?? Do you currently take lessons?? If so, your private instructor could provide a lot of stuff for you to look at (not to mention tons of help too!!).
Hope This Helps!! Good Luck, and please keep us updated!!

WOW noahbob, that is quite an undertaking, especially for a highschool chair try-out. The question now is, can you have that worked up in time?? I would think your director (or whoever is conducting the audition) would rather hear a MUSICAL (key word) etude, over a difficult piece in which the auditionee stumbled through, missing a few notes and not playing with the beauty or phrasing of the other auditionee. However, as I don't know your circumstances, you will have to be the judge. Good Luck on your audition, and keep us updated!!!

I agree with ClariBone. It would be much better to play a slightly less difficult piece astonishingly well, than something more difficult not as well. The director wants to hear you playing at your best. You most likely won't have all that much time to play anyways, unless you have a very long audition process or a very small section. It'd be better to play something that the director remembers as played astonishingly well (or some other adjective like that) rather than leaving with a pat on the head and the director remembering that you bit off a whole lot more than you could chew but did okay with it.

But, I also don't know your circumstances, how you play, how long you have, etc. It is a good piece if you play it well, for sure! Best of luck!

U both make good points but this is a "private" audition. In other words there is no piano accompaniment or and audience, Just me and the director, it is only a wind ensemble chair placement. Thats why i was wondering what etude would be pefect, or what solo would be good. {:

I'm surprised there's not a piece that everyone has to work on (the same piece). I would suggest one of the rose etudes as well. The one that led me to several 1st chairs was No. 7 in the Rose 32 book. It's not overly complicated and really shows off a LOT of musicality as well as proficient intonation, et al.

What I don't understand is why you want to do Weber 1 for "only a seating audition!" You keep emphasizing the fact that it's only an audition for seating, yet you want to do a piece as complex and difficult as Weber 1?! Stick with an etude for solo clarinet and you'll do just fine. You don't even need to "work up" a piece: do a piece you've practiced and done well with in the past.
