<<1951-96 Gigliotti, Anthony M.

45 years! Is this some sort of a record for length of tenure as a principal with a major orchestra?

Maybe it's a tie? (for this year at least) I was under the impression that McGinnis left NY in 1960.

yes well ... I bet none of my american friends could name the current principal of any british orchestra (besides the LSO) ... off the top of your head and without looking the information up.

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

The Acapulco Phil. must have an obsession. Everything starts with "A."

for ohsuzan

you mentioned 45 yrs being some sort of record.
In Ken Shaw's similar post of the Chicago Sym, Adolph Herseth, was Principal Trumpet for 53 yrs, 1948-2001.

As an aside, what about a record on the opposite end of longevity.
In our city's Symphony (name intentionally not mentioned), the previous Principal Clarinetist lasted about 5 months. Although he finished out the concert season, he was informed at about the 4th month or so that his contract would not be renewed.
There was a host of reasons ranging from 'discussions' with the conductor/director to complaints from fellow Wind principals.
I assume it really got out of hand when his mother began calling the Director, inquiring about what he was doing to her son.

There's a recording of Bonade playing in 1918 Mendelssohn MidSummer on the bottom of the mytempo.com page (link is in my signature)

Interesting Philly recording. Notice how much faster it ends than it begins. The mike must have been right over the flute. But, very worthwhile listening.

Really.......... about 84-86 to start out and probably about 92 at the end!

I don't know who the conductor was - it's a public domain recording

There were no mics in 1918. The flute might have been placed closer to the recording horn.
