 Niccolo Paganini

I know this is not clarinet related, but does anyone know of absolutely SUPERIOR recordings of Paganini's 1st violin concerto? I have Sarah Chang, it's ok, but I want something with less concentration on technique and more on expressive passages.

hey,
my brother's a violin player... you might wanna try salvatore accardo's recording with the london philharmonic conducted by charles dutoit. there's a cd of accardo playing all five concertos, the caprices, and a few other pieces for about $50 on amazon. he's an amazing player, and his paganini is awesome. hope this helps.

I second the Accardo! His Caprices are also one of my favourites ( Behind Perlman, Midori and Kaler). Dutoit is also one I like.

A SUPERIOR recording, you say? I'm not sure if I can fit the bill on that one.

All we can do is be thankful that we DO have diverse virtuosi exist today, and that each one of them brings something new to every work they perform.

Now, which personality would you prefer?

First off, may I suggest the very fine recording my Itzhak Perlman has made with the Royal Philharmonic? The fine, lyrical portions of the concerto is wonderfully realized, with just the right amount of impish humor.

For an equally fine performance by a violinist who could impress his personality on anything he played, try Francescatti. That man shines like sunshine. The excellent point about this recording is that the sheer joy which he plays it with is enough to whisk you away in the music, forgetting that technical pyrotechnics are involved.

But something more along the lines of Sarah Chang might yield in a recording by the Japanese violinist Midori. If you have the time (and money), do be sure to give her a listen.

All the best in your record hunt,
-Leo

You can't beat Perlman or Accardo ... for my money.

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

Have seen them on "The Sopranos"....they're great. The devil made me do it. The Accardo is an older recording....probably one of the first put out on cd in the '80s....but it's still good. If Sonnenberg has it out I'd certainly recommend it ....even without hearing it. For kicks get Moto Perpetuo for clarinet......I think Spring has it on cd....but play it yourself.

IMHO, the Michael Rabin recording is head and shoulders above everything else. This is one of those recordings where you put it on and get ready to go about your business, and when Rabin comes in your jaw drops to the floor and you're hypnotized from beginning to end. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000064874/qid=1121790154/sr=1-7/ref=sr_1_7/103-7740560-3470227?v=glance&s=classical

Ken - you're spot on ... I had forgotten about this performance, but in all honesty the musical quality of the Paganini concerti is highly suspect. But they were purely to show everyone in Europe at the time that he was without peer as a violinist.

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.
