Thinking of getting the Buffet E-11 A clarinet
Author: missclarinetist

Hi guys, I currently own an E-11 Buffet Bb Clarinet and I'm thinking of getting the A because I needed one to play in an orchestra. Should I invest in another E-11 or save my money for an R-13 A?
Also, my E-11 was bought in Dec. 2002. How much is it worth now if I'm thinking of selling it? It is still in good condition.

Although unlikely, but if you live in America, your E11 might just be worth more right now than what you paid for it in 2002. Buffet's prices have soared up with most US retailers in the past couple of years.

I don't know a whole lot about the E-11, so you might want to take this with a grain of salt, but when I was in high school, my youth orchestra had 2 E-11's for us to borrow, and I remember having nothing but problems with them. I don't know if it was those particular instruments or the model in general, though. So my suggestion is to make sure you can try it out before you buy it.

E11's are pitched A442, at least the Bb ones sold in the US are - will that work for your orchestra? Your appear to be in Singapore - do you tune to A440 or A442?

Search ebay completed auction listings to see what used E11's are worth.

Ha! That's good info to know... I didn't know E11's were tuned to 442.

They are tuned to 442 but, it is very possible to be in tune on them at 440...

Your used E11 would probably go for about $350-$375 on a direct sale basis.

If you're seriously considering an E11 A, I noticed one for sale by John Butler. He's a BB sponsor. I read the description . It's like new and it's been O/H'd by John.
You can read about it on his web site, under products and his contact info is also indicated.
good luck

HI,

Let me start off by saying you know that the E-11 is like or based off the R-13 model but in the intermidiate level, byt what you should have done is gotten a R-13 B-flat fist now the E-11 is not bad, there is nothing against it but you will eventually have to replace it, but the A clarinet is an extra not that inmportant, but you still want it to be good. Now I have never tried the E-11 A clarinet, I do own a R-13 A clarinet and it is superb and it has a great response and I just love it. know what you should do before buying any clarinet you should try it and have a professional try this it as well get their insight on the clarinet as well. But you do what you please okay. And why I say the A clarinet is an extra because you really don't need it, you can transpose your pieces that are in a but that is why preople own an A clarinet because they don't want to transpose but I play in the Triangle Youth Philharmonic and I use the A clarinet for like only one piece and that is it but you know, do what you please and make sure the clarinet fits your needs okay. Goodluck in your orchestra.

If you are willing to save, then what I would do is save for a Bb R13 or other great clarinet (unless your Bb E11 is really good) and get a less expensive A clarinet.

Your E-11 is worth about $450 on Ebay.

Unless you are going to major in music, getting an E-11 A Clarinet is fine. Even if you are going to major later on, getting that as your first A is a good choice and then maybe Sophomore year getting the professional model.

The original question was about the E-11 A clarinet for orchestral play. I play an R-13 A and Bb in orchestra and my opinion is this.......... If you are going to play in an orchestra a lot then you will play your A more than you think. It's not an auxiliary instrument for me. We use our A's more than our Bb's on many concerts. I went ahead and purchased my R-13 when I found out how much we play the A. I bought a used one so it didn't cost as much as a new one.

It might be wise to actually find out how much you are going to play the A before purchasing one. I used a transposing program or hand transposed all the pieces prior to purchasing my A clarinet.

Good luck with everything,
Rebecca

I would vote to learn to transpose instead of using a program to do the work for you. Transposing abilities will absolutely come in handy at one point and probably several in your playing experience.

It's like learning to add and multiply manually first before using a calculator to do it.

If you really want an A Clarinet, I would go for the E-11, unless you want to spend more money on a R-13. I recently bought the E-11 A Clarinet, and I love it! It is very similar to my R-13 Bb, except it's in key of A! I think it's a good buy, but you need to try it out before you make any decisions.

To start with, the E-11 and R-13 have different bore diameters, different barrel lengths, different tuning pitch (442/440), pinky keys set at different heights, and a totally different feel to the hand position.

Other than that, I guess they are similar [wink] ...GBK

Where did you get this idea? In addition to the differences in the two models that GBK noted above, the E11 has a cylindrical bore, not the polycylindrical bore of the R13. The two models aren't even made in the same country let alone the same factory. About the only thing they appear to have in common is that they are clarinets and they have the Buffet logo.

I think it's fairly common knowledge that the E11 Bb clarinet is pitched at 442. As I recall, however, Francois Kloc has stated that the actual design (e.g., tone hole size and placement) is that of a 440 instrument - the higher pitch resulting entirely from a short barrel. Also, if memory serves, Francois said that the reason for the higher pitch was so that beginners (remember that Buffet considers the E11 a student instrument), whose embouchure has not yet developed, will be able to play in tune with other band instruments early on.

Surely Buffet doesn't target the E11 A, C or Eb models for 4th and 5th graders, do they? The prices, considerably higher than the Bb, suggest that Buffet considers these to be relatively inexpensive entry-level models for players who only have occasional need of such an instrument and schools with tight budgets. If this is the case, it seems to me that Buffet would not have the same incentive to pitch them at 442. I notice that Pewd was careful to limit his comment to E11 Bb's. Have any of you (who are following this thread) seen expicit documentation (or been told by Francois) that the A, C and Eb models are also pitched at 442? I did a cursory check of the Buffet web site and couldn't find any specific mention of the pitch for any of the E11 models. Along similar lines, I also wonder if any these other E11 instruments have the smaller right-hand pinkey key cluster that is characteristic of the E11 Bb.

Best regards,
jnk

Re: Pitch of the E-11 clarinets.

I was just having this same discussion with a colleague who plays with me in orchestra and owns an E-11 C clarinet. With the supplied factory barrel, he found that his E-11 was continually sharp to my R-13 C clarinet. He has now since purchased a longer barrel from Guy Chadash.

The Buffet catalogue confirms that all E-11's (Bb, A, Eb and C) E-12's and E-13's are pitched at A=442.

See the attached page from a recent Buffet catalogue...GBK

I am in Singapore too using a 1928 Buffet A clarinet. Don't just look for E11s, since shops in Singapore don't stock them, you will have to order them and you can expect to pay about 1.5 X as much as you paid for your Bb.

Besides, an E11 isn't going to last you for your life. Save your money and get RC or R13.

By the way, in case you don't know, the clarinets that are shipped to Singapore are at the lower end of quality. And which orchestra is that? SNYO?

Chan

Interesting that the Buffet catalogue excerpt specifies the bore on E-11 to be poly-cylindrical rather than cylindrical as has been pointed out earlier in this thread

I wouldn't recommend an E-11 because I have a 1987 Bb and it is unacceptably sharp in the low e as well as off up to g. there is no way to tune these notes relative to the rest of the horn unless you stop up the bell with your knee. I'd check that A with a tuner on the low notes if I were you.

thats because i haven't touched any E11's in other keys.
looks like GBK answered it above.

i only trust marketing literature so far - i'm from missouri originally :)

I'm currently a guest player for the NUSSO (National University of Singapore Symphony Orchestra). This will be my home orchestra every summer I'm back here visiting. Because the NUSSO will be playing at the prestigious Aberdeen International youth festival I decided to stop playing for them this summer just a couple weeks ago as I made the decision to save money for college and not go on the trip. I will still play for them every summer I'm here.
