 need advice
Author: tishmommyof2

I started playing the clarinet in the 4th grade. I played through high school and then laid it down for about 12 years. I have just recently decided to pick it up again. I have a Bundy made by Selmer and I have no idea if that is even a good instrument. The advice I need is should I go and buy a new clarinet or should I just have mine refurbished. Here is all I know about it ->
Bundy by Selmer
bought in 1984
577
resonite
made in the USA

Thanks :)

i think the question is, does it play well. Bundy's aren't the best instruments, but if you're considering playing seriously again, it may be worthwhile to buy a new instrument. Good luck. There are MANY stories similar to yours. Do a search of the bboard.

Ahhh, many stories indeed, Tish-mommyof2. Lots of folks who visit here have 'return-rights' stories to tell. My personal experience as a returning player and repairer of clarinets is that the Bundy 577 is, in "general" (meaning, if it hasn't been overly abused), is a pretty good all around instrument. (And... it's already paid for :) I'd ask your local repair tech about a Play Condition Only service. That's a no-frills service/adjustment where a tech puts the horn in working order for you - and it costs much less than a general overhaul. After you're back into playing for a while you'll be better able to decide if you want to up-grade or not.

Whatever you decide, please allow me to be among those here who will want to wish you well on your return jouney into the ranks of music makers :)

Great advice from ron b........also.....

After you've been back into the playing world again you may make some connections with people that could help you find a new or used instrument better suited for you and at a better price than retail.

I am one that returned to playing after a 20 year break and am having so much fun. I join ron in wishing you well in your return.

It's basically pretty crappy, but if you can get it worked on for $50 or less than it would be worth it if you can't afford spending $500-$800 for something better.

A better instrument will probably have smaller tone holes as the bottom hand tone holes are craters on the Bundy Clarinet.

It's all about the budget. If you can afford quality then get something better. If $$ are an issue then get it worked on, but remember that the instrument is worth probably about $150 max.

A complete overhaul in my neighborhood will cost $125.

You may be able to find a nice beginner's instrument (secondhand) for little more than $250 this time of year (when the kids quit for 12 years).

My favs in this catagory;

The Ridenour TR147 (good enough for me to actually buy)
The Couesnon Monopole (older wooden instrument with gorgeous tone)
Yamaha YCL-52/72/CS

The Bundy is designed with durability foremost, playability next and sound least...

Don't cut corners on reeds or a decent mouthpiece, either!

Depends on wether you want to play for fun every once in awhile or more seriously like everyday, worried about perfect intonation and playability.
You are probably better off getting a Play condition or a repad, because old pads are just pretty nasty and dont last long anyway.

Let me add my welcome, too. The best part of my return to playing is in the opportunities I've found to play with others.

I'm particularly grateful to those, so much better than me, who are allowing me to sit in with them and learn to make music again.

Happy Birthday, and many, many more

enjoy

Congrats on the purchase of your new baby (perhaps a name change is in order, how 'bout tishmommyof3??). Check out local performance venues (community bands/orchestras) and see if you can join. These are definitely one of the best performance experiences ever because the people there play because they love it!!! Happy Clarineting!!!

You have a decent instrument, disregard that rude poster who used the term crap on something he's not actually seen. It's not a professional level clarinet, but I'm thinking that's not what you probably want right now, yes?

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

Right, I knew i wanted to move up a level. After a lot of research I realized that I wanted a wood clarinet. I was able to get the Yamaha and stay with in my budget :)

Diz, I wasn't intending to be rude, just straight with her. I've seen plenty of Bundy Clarinets. Of course it isn't a "professional" level instrument.

But that wasn't the question.

Hello all,

I see Tish has bought a new clarinet, which is great. I just wanted to pass on that I've played the LeBlanc Rapsodie intermediate clarinet (in the $700 range) at a couple of conventions now and it is excellent, especially for the price. 50% of a clarinet, of course, is the mouthpiece. Reeds are important too. Tish, do you need any help in those areas? Once I started my performance career, I told myself that I would not teach again (because of all the young, non-practicers I had to listen to each week). Since then, I changed my mind and would teach someone like Tish who has chosen to come back to the clarinet of their own free will. Good luck, Tish, I hope all goes well!

Yes the mouth piece is a mystery to me as well. My Yamaha came with a "Yamaha 4c" Of course that is greek to me. I don't remember learning or even hearing about this in school :(

Welcome to the grand association of rethreads!

I had a Bundy, sold it and bought a professional level instrument when I took it up again and I'm happy I did. Plays better, easier to play and makes me feel better about the whole situation, but it depends on your goals and to no small extent you budget.

Good luck
Rick

Best

I would also like to welcome you back. I have returned after 44 years and I found that as an adult I know exactly what I want to express musically as opposed to when I was a young man I had no concept of what I was trying to achieve and I just tried to blow the heck out of my clarinet. Best Wishes.

I agree. Getting older has given me a new outlook. Things that I took for granted as a kid, I now I have a new sense of purpose and drive in.
