I'm just wondering if anybody, after playing your clarinet for a long time have you started to feel like the inside of your upper lip swollen? Is there anything that I'm doing wrong that's causing this? Thanks

I think you played too much. I have done tough playing like opera concerts and orchestra concerts in a row (both pieces were big for my clarinet part) and playing Mahler symphony (very demanding, you know....). After these tough jobs, my mouth feels exactly like you do. The best thing you can do is to take a rest. Try to find a time to take a rest and try not to practice too much.

Take care.

Well do you think 4-5 hours a day is reasonable? Because honestly this is how much I practice (school nights only 2-3). I just have a habit of practicing until I'm satisfied at the end. But in the mirror, I flipped out my upper lip and it has like marks from the tip of the mouthpiece. Marks as in lines..

How about lower lip? Is your upper lip painful?

4-5 hours a day... is that consecutive?

Spread out throughout the day, about an hour or so at a time, you should be fine.

Your upper lip should not be swollen unless you are compensating for a weak embrochure by involving your lip and actually creating a double lip embrochure. For me the sides (cheeks and jaw) of my mouth are the sorest spots. See if you are bitting through your top lip.

My embouchure is basically single lip, but I employ element of double lip by pressing upper lip toward mouthpiece. I work on flat chin for lower lip to stay firm. So, basically, single lip embouchure, but I am holding mouthpiece with lips and corners of lips (important point.)...not with teeth.
