I just noticed today that someone claims to be selling Artie Shaws clarinets on E-bay and will supply a certificate of authenticity. Does anyone have any comments on the validity of these instruments?

Kind of cool clarinets, likely worth about $300/400 each. It will be interesting to see what Artie's slobber is worth. I'll bet the reserve is never reached.

They might be worth that to a clarinetist, but a collector might pay thousands (if not tens of thousands) for them.

I've got the swab that Anton Stadler used in 1791, when he performed K.622.
I'll even write you a "Certificate of Authenticity" ...GBK

Gosh, if Shaw donated two clarinets to the Smithsonian, and these three clarinets on eBay are actually his as well, he must have owned several!
Imagine that!
Bill.

[ No eBay links of current auctions - GBK ]
What reason do we have to doubt the authenticity? Yes, it is good to be skeptical and research the clarinets before jumping in. If interested, I'd start asking the seller (who has a 484 positive rating) questions, such as if he could provide a picture of the certificates of authenticity, how he came about them, etc. Who is the seller? Someone who might be directly connected to the estate? Are they willing to provide some evidence of this as well?
Bottom line is, I'll assume they're authentic, but wouldn't bid on them until my beliefs are verified.

GBK--
You also deleted my comment that the seller is also selling two Artie Shaw saxes and has a rating of 484.
Sorry about the eBay link; I was unaware.

I still don't believe that that swab used to belong to Anton Stadler. That means that it is 214 years old! Something that old would have fallen apart and deteriorated by now. How do I know that's really Anton's swab and not just some random picture of a swab? And if it really did belong to Anton, how much do you think it's worth?

Why would we doubt the veracity of our esteemed colleague, and accept (without vetting, which is like petting without the cleanup) the position of a complete stranger?

The peole doing the selling are a licensed auction house (I Checked) and estate sales firm. They are selling off the Shaw estate this weekend on behalf of the Artie Shaw Foundation including hand written sheet music, art collection, personal items.
Auction started Friday and goes through tomorrow. The auction is at Shaw's home.

I think that most musical instruments that belonged to dead artists usually go to collectors that can hardly play them. They buy them for the investment. There are alot of people that can't figure out what to do with the few bucks they have. After all, it is still just a clarinet. Certificate or no certificate. What would you do with Arties clarinet? Play it regularly?

Well Artie's Buffet went for $32,000 and looking at the bidding that must have been the reserve price. The two Selmers did not meet their reserves which exceeded $5355. His sax and piano are now up for sale by the same vendor.

I saw one of Artie's old clarinets hanging on the wall at my local T.G.I.F. restaurant --- probably explains the 30 cent jump on the menu for the fried broccoli cheese balls. v/r Ken
