I was saddened to learn of the death of Sergiu Commisiona; I had the pleasure of playing for him a number of times. His superb musicianship was always enlivened by his wicked sense of humor!

I agree whole-heartedly with your description of him- what a funny man (in that dry, caustic way). The music world (some of it, anyway) will miss him.

I've admired the recordings he made with the Houston Symphony. I'd buy cheapie $3.99 "best of" CDs in college that often had many Houston selection with him on the podium. They certainly didn't sound like they cost only $3.99. It's quite a loss.

His is a name that stuck with me ever since the one time I heard him conduct in Sydney, 16 years ago. Before beginning the first piece (I remember it was "Images" by Debussy), he looked up at a bank of speakers over the stage. There was a faint hiss coming from them. He dispatched the concertmaster Don Hazelwood from the stage to fix it. While Hazelwood was gone, the Maestro sat down in his vacant chair and started chatting with the violins.

He was also music director or the VSO for a number of years, 10 I believe. The first time I saw him conduct was at a Theatre that is physically part of a high school. It was a Friday evening and there was a basketball game in the gym. There must have been a door open that shold have been shut because in the quiet passages the whistle was slightly audible. The concert was all Mozart and the first piece was a divertimento, all very proper! During the break between movements we heard the whistle. Commisiona sneaked a look at the audience behind him and that caused very controlled laughter in the audience. His hands were coming up to start the second movement and someone must have scored an exciting basket as we heard an almighty cheer from the direction of the gym. He dropped his hands, bowed in the direction of the sound and audience and orchestra alike completely disintegrated with laughter. He then picked up his baton and carried on. A memorable evening to be sure!
