 Rovner plays flat?
Author: Michelle

I have just had an interesting experience with my soprano Bb and a new Rovner. It actually started with a new mouthpiece AND ligature. I put together a Hite mp and Rovner lig with my usual reed and it played so flat the needle was at the bottom. Eww, I thought and grabbed my V B45 mp and put the Rovner on it. Totally flat also! I then took off the Rovner and went back to my usual combo - an old Luyben and V B45 ... perfect! I put the Hite back on with the Luyben and tried that out... perfect!

In my unscientific and limited testing, it seems that my Rovner is playing extremely FLAT. Is this odd? I have one for my bass and it doesn't play flat.

Did you buy a High Pitch (HP) or Low Pitch (LP) ligature?

....GBK (who has used Rovner's for 30+ years and hundreds of performances)

first , try it with several different reeds - was your testing all with the same reed, or different ones?

also try changing the position of the rovner - higher up or lower down on the mouthpiece.

also make sure its tightened up snugly, the reed is centered on the mouthpiece, top of the ligature below the finished part of the reed, etc.

Did you put the screw on the top-right side? Rovner tells you to lubricate the screw also ....and be sure the "other" end is secured in the "hole". Maybe you didn't have the mp inserted all the way.

That's funny... my Rovner doesn't do that. Of course I haven't yet played it in an ensemble setting, so who knows what I might discover when I do.

I play several different mouthpieces and all play at about the same place on the tuner with the Rovner. I don't notice as much change in pitch as I do tone color when I go from the Rovner to say....my Luyben or Harrison. I just bought a BG Super Revelation after some encouragement from other clarinetists and I can't seem to like that one. Too bright and edgy sounding even with my lovely Gonzalez reeds. I'm working hard at trying to get my warm, sweet sound back and the BG just isn't going to give it to me. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Anyone have an opinion on that one?
