I read today that playing a wind instrument for an hour burns about 200 calories. This could be the extra incentive I need to play more....

But the problem is, doesn't playing the clarinet make you VERY hungry afterwards?
So a better way might be first have your meal(light, preferably), and .lay/practice
Playing the clarinet in the summer without air conditioning was like a real hard workout. Sweated a lot, and hopefully lost some grams?:)

i usually am pretty sweaty after a performance, i dunno if thats nervousness or just putting everything i have into it, i think a mix

I've lost about 45 lbs in the past 24 months and have been back to playing my clarinet for 19 of those months. Yes, I've been trying but not in any way other than by watching portion sizes. No diets. I practice about 2-3 hours a day too. Hmmmm?
Now........just imagine if I started brushing my teeth for an hour ....no, 2-3 hours a day. I could be a super model!! HA!

Hate to burst balloons, but....
There are some 3500 calories per pound of body weight, so at 200 cals per hour you're gonna have to play for 17.5 hours, non stop, to lose one pound.
And you burn about 150 cals/hour just sitting watching TV!

I play clarinet roughly 3 hours a day, tenor sax maybe an hour, and bass clarinet...uhm...not as much as I'd like; maybe two hours a week if I'm lucky. Last Saturday, I went to a band festival with some friends, and we spent a good 8 hours playing, breaking every two hours. We had a nice light brunch around 12pm, and played until 4 with a small break at 2. Right after I got done doing all of that work, the professor decides to bring us donuts. Ugh!

It's been my experience that playing actively makes me gain weight -- all that practice and rehearsal takes away time I'd otherwise go to the gym or go running.

Perhaps music compositions should be assigned "Caloric Numbers" as a measure of their difficulty, or energy needed to play them.
Akin to the Kirchel numbers.

Playing does cause a body to sweat - it does use a lot of energy. As well, the breathing aspect of it is very healthy.

I lost about 10 pounds while preparing my college recital. I think it was because I was practicing instead of eating!

Sixteenth note runs at allegro tempos should burn more calories than slow passages.
If you want to really burn calories, take up conducting. After rehearsing a couple of really fast numbers at our last wind symphony rehearsal, the conductor had really built up a sweat, despite the weather being cold and the humidity very low.
