I can just picture the marketing guys at Selmer. Sitting down around the table trying to figure out something to do to boost sales . . .
"Hmmm. Whatd'ya think this society needs Jill?"
"Well Bill, of new clarinets, I don't think it's had its fill."
"So you're suggesting we put another one out? Is that your will?"
"Yes. Maybe it'll put a little more cash in the till."
And so the Selmer St. Louis was born. Seems like a response to the Pete Fountain. Maybe not so much in accoustic design, however the "St. Louis"? With "gold plating"?
Couldn't find it on the Selmer web page, but it's for sale at wwbw. Just thought you might wanna know that we now have ANOTHER clarinet with which to argue about.
Ready . . . .
Set . . . . .
GO!

Speaking of new Selmer Clarinets:
Has anyone seen, heard or played the new
Selmer "Rosewood" BASS Clarinet?
Rumor has it that it's Model 40, and goes for $10G.
So, what's the story?

John, the 40 is real, and the price is a loohoo. Selmer gave me a price of $14K which must be list, so $10K seems like a plausible "retail". I gathered from the gang in Elkhart that they are made to order as they do not have them t'all.

I was actually curious about the balsa wood horn. Much easier to hoist around.

Quick followup, because it wasn't clear -- the Model 40 "Rosewood" is an EEb Contra alto.

What's this about "rosewood"?
Is the Selmer contralto not really rosewood (palisander)?

Hey Guys:
A guy here in NYC claims he saw a "Rosewood" BASS clarinet. He claims it's a model 40, to be made soon to replace the regular "Grenadilla" model 37 Bass clarinet in the Selmer line. The cost, again, is in the $10G range.
I own a "Rosewood" Contra-alto Selmer, but this is reported to be a BASS clarinet made of "Rosewood."
The question is:
Has anyone else seen, heard, or played this mystery horn?

Selmer is coming out with a new bass called the privilege. I have no idea if it's rosewood or grenadilla. It's a low C bass and they say the price is around $8,000 (not sure if that is list price or actual price).
Edit: Or was it 8,000 Euros? Can't remember, sorry.

I just checked the Selmer site USA & Paris, and there's no mention of this mysterious "Rosewood" BASS clarinet. There is, in fact, a model 40
Contra-alto just like mine, and it is "Rosewood."
I believe a "Rosewood" BASS is in the making, and it might be called
"Privilege" or whatever, and model 39, perhaps.
In any case, my "Rosewood" Contra is great, so I'd love to see or hear about any new "Rosewood" horns from Selmer.
BTW:
I play Buffet R-13's (A, Bb, Eb & C).
I do not receive any remuneration from either Selmer or Buffet, but I do enjoy playing their horns.

This apparent use of rosewoods [at least in name?] piqued my curiousity, so I looked up their tech. description in my USDA Forest Service booklet. It discusses both the Indian and the Brazillian varieties, which, along with our Afr. Blackwood [gren.], are all varieties of the Dalbergia genus. They are both listed as slightly less dense than Gren, and used as furniture veneers where hardness is desireable, and ?may? have red-black coloration for "beauty. It would be great to learn more, wouldn't it ?? Don
Thanx, Mark, Don

For the Selmer Rosewood Bass Clarinet discussion, I know WWBW listed one (as a model 40) under their bass clarinet section, but when I checked their website they only had the Contra-Alto listed.
