 Music Schools in Canada
Author: Aussie Nick

In the not so distant future I will be applying for post graduate study overseas. I have been over to England and Germany (would love to consider Germany but there would be no chance of ever getting work there), and I checked out the colleges in London and Manchester. As well as these I have looked into studying in Amsterdam and possibly the United States. I am wondering if I can get some opinions on the schools in Canada and whether or not it is worth including Canada in the equation. I have heard about the University or Toronto (not much though)... Any opinions from Americans and Canadians would be great. Thanks ;)

I believe MCGill in Montreal is considered on of the top music schools in north america, but I have heard nothing but the most glowing praises of the Montreal Conservatory of Music. I'm not sure whether or not it offers the "standard/traditional" degrees, but from what I've heard, it's a very strong and thorough school of Music. You might do a search about it. University of Toronto has a great reputation, as does the University fo British Columbia. UVic also has strength in Music education as well as in performance. The internet can tell you a great deal about all of them. I hope you can get an alumnus to give you details!

Aussie Nick,

I went to McMaster, but didn't study music; in any case, it was a long time ago and things change.
Hamilton (Ontario, Canada) is a friendly small city. The cost of living is probably lower than Toronto's, but Toronto has a better public transportation system. McMaster's web site should provide more information: http://www.humanities.mcmaster.ca/programmes/music.html

If you have any questions, just send me email.

For information on U of T, <www.utoronto.ca> should help. If not, I can give you an email address for a music professor (old friend) I know there.

Regards,
Hans

Don't sell the University of British Columbia short. I have heard their orchestra and would rate it in the top 10 in all of Canada. Their wind ensemble isn't shabby either. I went to a violin recital last year and the gal was excellent, turns out she was only 3rd chair in the orchestra. Lots of the Vancouver Symphony players teach there part time including Wes Foster who has to be one of the top symphonic clarinetists (a student of Marcellus) in Canada and North America for that matter.

If you like cultural diversity you will love UBC, and Vancouver weather is the best that Canada has to offer.

A great teacher gives you answers to questions
you don't even know you should ask.

Joaquin Valdepenas of the Toronto Symphony (U of T) and Bob Crowley of the Montreal Symphony (McGill I believe) are excellent players and teachers. Anyone would do well to learn from either of them.
