Adding extra fingers cleans up the sound, but defeats dexterity in fast passages does it not?

If you're headed up over the break, the extra fingers help get there. Coming down, they're already there. If you're not going over the break, then at least with the Bb you'd want to use the alternate fingering anyway. I don't know if the A has some alternate that cleans it up.
On the really fast stuff,I'm not on the note long enought to note it's stuffiness, I finger for speed, and sometimes I practice extra fingers down to ease the break. I have no idea if this is what the pros do however.

In fast passages, most people don't worry about it and just play the Bb as A key plus register key. The notes simply don't last long enough to be that noticeable when you are going fast.

Up to a point, extra fingers come in handy, but I do think it's no use for a clarinetist to grow more than 6 fingers per hand. More than that and the extra fingers start getting in the way on a clarinet, although they're nice for playing the piano.

This discussion about Bb (A key plus register key) was very timely. I have a Selmer Signature and I love it, but the Bb is weak. It even sometimes sounds "watery" but I can't figure out where moisture would build up for this note. (I have looked down the instrument and the register key is a raised cylinder inside so I don't see how moisture could roll into it. And I don't know what to do about it if it did--no way to get to it.) Anyway, I was experimenting and found a very pretty Bb by using the A key plus the right index finger side key (second from the top.) I can't use it in fast sections, but it sounds fine if I need to play a long note. What a strange little note the Bb is. Michael
