headaches - anybody else have them?
Author: 3dogmom

I've been having a headache for about two months and was just diagnosed with cluster headaches of the "ice pick" variety. Have just begun taking a calcium-channel blocker and NSAID for pain. I can't play without pain (well, the pain is always there but playing makes it worse) and have performance obligations. I would be interested in hearing how anyone else copes with a similar problem. Do I cancel everything now, trying to be responsible, or do I wait to see if by some miracle I get better?

You might find lots of resources on the web including the American Council for Headache Education: http://www.achenet.org/
There are various types of therapies and medications that are used for headaches these days. Hopefully, working with a headache/pain specialist who is aware of the latest research can get this under control soon.

Are you sure you are not suffering from dehydration due to the extra breathing required by lots of practice? Try a little more salt in the diet and drink plenty of water and see what happens. Also, if a couple of aspirin helps, that would be an indication that dehydration might be the cause. It's is worth trying.

I used to get pretty bad headaches that seemed like they were centered behind one of my eye sockets. After I quit smoking I didn't get them anymore until several years later when I punctured an eardrum, I got them again until it healed. I suspect they were caused by particulate irritants in the sinus. (Note: I'm not a doctor, I just play one at home)

Usually when I play everyone else gets a headache from loud squeaks.(Just felt that a little humor was needed)

Hi Sue,
I too suffer from migraine headaches of the cluster type. Mine is from an over dailation of one of the veins in the front part of my head. Right side. I tried the calcium channel blockers and they did help but my best relief has come from taking an anti seizure medication as a preventive measure. In the clinical trial of it they found that migraine relief was a positive side effect. It can cause weight loss in some people so you just need to ask your doc. about it and if one of these kinds of meds is right for you. I think there are several on the market now. I also have a great med for once the headache has started but hesitate to name the meds on this board. E-mail me if you want the names of these meds. They have been a life saver for me.

You are right in that playing will certainly aggrivate these headaches and until you get them under control you may need to play less each day. I agree with Ed. See a specialist for the latest on how the newer generation of migraine meds can help you.

Wishing you good health,
Rebecca
